They live here and they're ‘waiting forthe big event. the lighting of the Christmas tree and, natu rally, the opening of the presents. (A knock atthe door) That must be Judge Drosselmeler now. He always. stops by on Christmas Eve with a nice gilt forthe children. I wonder what ifthe’ bringing tonight. (The Judge hangs his muffler and hat on the clothes tree near the door ‘The children pull him acrass tke stage. They sand together, slightly Sage Left facing the re, and when itis lit, they all applaud ) (Sighing.) On, is’t i beautiful I think is the best tee ever. (tna very superior manner.) There was one that was alot nicer, Mare, br that was long before you ere born. keep forgetting what a litle kid you are. (Marie gives him a nasty look. (Running toward the tree) Ob, look! Toy soldiers. Just what { wanted. (Tearing away the wrapping, she holds up a tiny nutcracker) Ob, what ‘That's me she's talking about. Can you believe ie? A dear, litle fonny ‘man. That's not exactly the way I'see myself. (Pause.) Tall, dark and Ihandsome would be more lke it. Oh, well, TAM a nuteracker. You see, what [do fora living is. Terack aut. You pata walnut ia my mouth and 1 bite down on it and crack the shell. My dentist would like me to retire. hard on the teeth, you know, but, wel, actually, I'm nuts about my work. (He laughs at his own joke) MARIE: (Peering at the tiny nutcracker.) What isi? THE JUDGE: — (Demonsirating) Is a nutcracker! and make him bite down on ita fou see, you put a nut in his mouth 1, PRESTOY, the aut is cracked. NUTCRACKER: Jost FRITZ: (Grabbing the tiny nutcracker) Let me see him. (He jams a nut in its ‘mouth, slams the jaw shut and the nuteracker breaks) (Distressed) Oh, Fritz, look what you've done. You've broken it (Throwing the tiny nutcracker on the floor and stomping across the stage (a the bench.) Oh, who cares! It dida't work eight anyway. Tt was jast Tsai cheap junk. MARIE: ‘What an avvful thing to say, Fritz, NUTCRACKER: (To the audience) I agree. MARIE: (Continuing) And you never even thanked the Judge. (Fritz sits on the bench, Siage Left, and sulks,) Tm sorry, Judge. (Picking up the Broken nutcracker) 1 think it's a wonderta gi. THE JUDGE: Hore. Let's see if ean fx him for you. (He fddles with t brief.) There, Good as new. (He hands the tiny nutcracker 10 Marie) MARIE: (Oh, thank you, Judge. I take good care of him. {promise I wil. THE JUDGE: (Crossing 1 the clothes treet get hishat and scar) Wel, must be going how. Merry Christmas ¢o both of you... .and to the Nuteracker. (He exits) NUTCRACKER: _(Nizving after him.) Good night to you to, Judge. (Then, 10 che audience, 4a he rubs his jaw.) Well, that was a close cal, If Ido say so myself. MARIE: (Crossing to Fritz and sitting down beside him on the bench,) You weren't very alee tonight, Fritz. . and on Christmas Eve, 00, FRITZ: Jumping up angrly,) Oh, who cares! wish you'd just leave me alone, ‘Marie. I wish everybody would leave me alone. 'm going to bed! (He exit Stage Left) MARIE: (To the uiny nutcracker.) Oh, Kwish 1 dide't have to goto bed at al. wish, could just stay here with you until Christmas morning. (She curls up on the bonch withthe nutcracker. Theelock begins lo chinse. [tis midnight) START TAPE NUTCRACKER: — (Listening.)Say, Usd no idea it was midnight already. Ihave heard that ‘some very strange things ean happen a midnight. March Of The Toy Soldiers (“Midnight In The House”) (The Chorus ings asthe two armies enter fom opposite sides ofthe stage. The Mouse King marches before his arm): the Nutcracker marches atthe head ofhis army.
