Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Delhi ELL100 Introduction To Electrical Engg: Problem Set 10

This document contains 6 electrical engineering problems related to magnetics and transformers. Problem 1 involves calculating the total magnetic flux in a symmetric core made of silicon sheet steel. Problem 2 involves calculating the current required to produce a given magnetic flux in an air gap, given the magnetic circuit dimensions and material permeability. Problem 3 similarly involves calculating the current to produce a given total magnetic flux across an air gap, using symmetry considerations. The remaining problems involve calculating voltages, currents, and power in transformer and circuit scenarios.

ELL100 Introduction to Electrical Engg: Problem Set 10

1. Silicon sheet steel has the following magnetisation characteristics.

Field Intensity Flux Density

0 0
50 0.35
100 0.70
150 0.90
200 1.00
250 1.07
300 1.12
350 1.17
400 1.20
450 1.23
500 1.25
550 1.27
600 1.28

700 1.30
750 1.31
800 1.32

A symmetric core of silicon sheet steel is shown in Fig. 1. Assume a =

c = 10 cm, b = d = 20 cm. Find the total magnetic flux produced by a
current of 2 A in the 150-turn coil.

Figure 1: Figure for Q. 1

2. Consider the magnetic circuit in Fig. 2 below, with the given dimensions.
Calculate the current required to be passed in the coil having 200 turns
to create a flux of 1.28 mWb in the air gap. Neglect fringing effect and
leakage flux. (All dimensions are in mm). Assume that the operation is
in the linear region of the hysteresis curve with permeability of 0.0016.

3. Silicon sheet steel is used for the core in Fig. 3 shown below. a = 20 cm,
b = 40 cm, c = 160 cm, d = 60 cm, e = 40 cm, N 1 = N 2 = 500 turns.
Estimate the value of I1 = I2 to produce a total magnetic flux of 100
mWb across the 5 mm air gap. Use symmetry to solve the problem.

4. Short circuit (SC) and Open circuit (OC) tests are performed on a trans-
former 5 kVA, 400 V/200 V, 50 Hz (see Fig. 4).
(a) Find the circuit parameters using the data given below.
(b) Using the parameter data find the efficiency for full-load and half-load
operation.
