1 Coordinates, Additional Transformation Sheet

The document provides exercises on electromagnetic fields that require applying concepts like learning curves, semantic networks, and vector operations. It includes problems calculating scalar and vector products of vectors in different coordinate systems, deriving representations of vectors in spherical coordinates, and determining magnetic flux densities and charge distributions using various coordinate transformations. Solving the problems demonstrates the need for electromagnetic field content in applications like electrical engineering.

Electromagnetic Fields I Exercise 1

Regarding learning in general:

1. Draw the learning curve for knowledged/understanding versus time as well as for
coordinative/motoric abilities versus time in a qualitative manner. Do these curve
differ with respect to one another?
2. Explain the term ”semantic network” and illustrate it was well.
3. Can beeing ”hard or easy to understand” be an attribute of a piece of information?

1 Coordinates, Additional Transformation Sheet

Advices on the coordinates, coordinate systems, ∇, ∇·, ∇× . . . can be found on the ad-
dtional transformation sheet, which has been provided with the script.
1.1 Which mathematical contents from the high school and the first mathematic lectures
are a prerequisite for the lecture ’electromagnetic fields’ ?
1.2 How do you calculate the scalar product and the vector product of two vectors ~a, ~b in
cartesian coordinates? How can these products be interpreted? Make use of sketches
in order to illustrate your answers.
1.3 Draw two vectors ~a, ~b, which do connect the origin with a point in space each. Illustrate
the basis vectors at the tip of ~a, ~b. Do so for both the basis vectors of the Cartesian
coordinates and spherical coordinates. Can you detect any essential difference by
comparing both version? In case you can, what is it?
1.4 Derive, based on a sketch, a representation of the vector ~r in spherical coordinates as
well as the infinitisemal volume element dV .

~ is given
1.5 Following hereafter, using cartesian coordinates the magnetic flux density B
for the point r~a = (a, −a, 0)T , with a > 0:
 
1
~ r~a ) = µ · I ·  1 
B(
8πa
0
Determine the corresponding expression for B(~ r~a ) in spherical coordinates. Make use
of the provided sheet, which tells how to do the transformation.
1.6 Calculate the total charge Q of an inhomogeneously charged sphere with radius Rβ
and a charge density ρ in spherical coordinates of:
r C
ρ(r, ϑ, ϕ) = ϑϕ 3
Rβ m
ϑ, ϕ in radiant.
1.7 Assume that you have finished your education as an electrical engineer and work
as such. Give at least three different situations/problems of your work life, which
demonstrate that you need the content the lecture ”electromagnetic fields.”
