Who is to blame for the death of King Duncan and all the tragic events that follow in the

play 
Macbeth​? 
 
At  the  beginning  of the play, Macbeth is a loyal and brave friend to King Duncan. After visiting 
the  witches  and  hearing  that  he’ll  become  king,  Macbeth  gets  a  bit  out  of  control  and  greedy. 
Hearing  these  predictions  from  the  witches  and  Lady  Macbeth’s  encouragement, Macbeth goes on 
and  kills  Duncan.  Afterwards,  Macbeth’s guilt and fear lead him to committing even more murders as 
the  time  goes  by  to  help  him  feel better about himself and secure his power. His confidence later on 
begins  to  fade  and  lead  to  his  failure  and  he  is  eventually  overthrown  from  being king and his killed 
by  the  people  that  he  was  mistreated  by.  Macbeth  is  to  blame  for  Duncan’s  death  and  the  tragic 
events  afterwards  because  he  lead  himself  get  out  of  control  and  he  listened  to  the  witches.  At the 
end  of  the  play,  Macbeth  got  what  he  deserved.  Macbeth  was  beheaded  by  Macduff  and  Macduff 
became the King of Scotland.  
 
Firstly, Macbeth went on and talked to the witches at the beginning of the play. In act 1, scene 
1,  line  12  it  states  “Fair  is  foul,  and  foul  is  fair.”  This quote is from the opening scene of the play and is 
spoken  by  all  three  witches  at  once.  It  means  “good  is  evil  and  evil  is  good.”  This  seems  like  an 
oxymoron.  How  can  something  be  both  good  and  bad?  Since  this  quote  starts  the  play,  we  are 
wondering  just  who  or  what  is  good  and  who  is  evil.  The  quote  is  a  bit  of  a  riddle,  so  it  builds 
suspense  by  making  the  audience  wonder  if  we'll  ever  figure  out  what  it  means.  This  lets  the 
audience  know  that  the  witches  are  mysterious  and  don’t  speak  plainly  about  their  intentions.  We 
don’t  know  if  the  witches  are  just  commenting  on  the  play  or  actually  influencing  the  actions  of  the 
characters.  This  gives  us  a  idea  that  something  bad  is  going  to  happen.  Macbeth  should’ve  never 
went  to  see  the  witches  because  everyone  knows  that  witches  lead  to  something  bad  happening. 
After  Macbeth  talked  to  the  witches,  they  told  him  that  he’ll  be  King  of  Scotland.  Macbeth  got  the 
idea  from  his  wife  that he should kill Duncan and his wife encouraged him because then she’ll be the 
queen.  I  believe  that  Duncan’s  death  was  caused  by  Macbeth  being  greedy  and only thinking about 
himself.  Macbeth  didn’t  even  realize  how  Duncan’s  family  would’ve  felt  when  they  heard  about  the 
death.  
 
Secondly,  Macbeth  was  feeling  insecure  about  himself  and  he  wanted to secure his powers. 
The  next  killing  that  Macbeth  did  was  the  killing  of  Banquo.  Banquo  was  a  good  friend  of  Macbeth. 
They  both  used  to  be  soldiers  for  Duncan’s  army.  But  after  the  killing  of King Duncan, Banquo had a 
feeling  that  the  person  who  killed  Duncan  was  Macbeth.  Both  Macbeth  and  Duncan  suspect  each 
others  for  standing  in  his  way,  so  Macbeth  decided  to  send  out  servants  to  kill  both  Banquo  and 
Fleance.  Luckily,  Fleance  ran  away.  In  act 3, scene 1, line 129-130, it states “Both of you know Banquo 
was  your  enemy“  Another  quote  also  is  in  act  3, scene 1, line 143-144 and it states “We shall, my lord, 
perform  what  you  command  us.”  Macbeth  in  the  same  act  but  lines  161-162  state  “It  is  concluded. 
Banquo,  thy  soul’s  flight,  if  it  find heaven, must find it out tonight.” During these parts, Macbeth wants 
the  servants  to  kill  Banquo  and  Fleance  but  the  servants  didn’t  want  to  participate  in  a  murder  but 
then  Macbeth  tells  them  that  Banquo  was  their  enemy.  The  servants  then  change  their  minds  and 
they  kill  Banquo.  Macbeth  knows  that  Banquo  suspects  him  of  killing  Duncan  and  he’s  also  furious 
that  he  has  done  a  lot  of  things  to  make  him  king  and  he  doesn’t  want  Banquo  or  any  of  his 
descendants  to ruin anything for him because later on Banquo’s family will benefit  from it rather than 
him.  So  during  the  feast  he  tells  his  wife  that  he  wants  to  be alone but instead he goes out and calls 
his  servants  to  do  the killing for him. I believe that Macbeth was being greedy and needy because he 
only thinks about himself and wants things to be down as he wants them.  
 
 Lastly,  the  second  to  last  murder  that  was  committed  by  Macbeth  was  the  killing  of  Lady 
Macduff  and  her  sons.  During  that  time  of  the  killing,  Macduff wasn’t there to help his family. Instead 
Macduff  went  to  England  to  convince  Malcolm  to  return  to  Scotland  with  the  help  of  his  english 
forces  to  help  and  dethrone  Macbeth  from  being  king.  Macbeth  became  evil  and  all  the  Macduff 
wanted  was  for  peace  and  safety  again  for  the  people  of  Scotland.  When  the  murders  arrive  to 
Macduff’s  home,  they  only  find  Macduff’s  wife  and  sons  because  they  didn’t know that Macduff fled 
to  England. So the murders kill Lady Macduff and her sons to eliminate the threat to Macbeth.  During 
this  tragic  event,  some  may  say  that  it  was  only  Macbeth’s  fault for everything but in the other hand, 
these  tragic  events  were  also  caused  by  the  witches.  If  it  wasn’t  for the witches telling Macbeth that 
he’ll  be  the king, Macbeth wouldn’t commit all of these murders. In act 4,  scene 1, line 90-92, it states 
“Be  bloody,  bold,  and  resolute. Laugh to scorn the power of man, for none of woman born shall harm 
Macbeth.”  The  witches  are  saying  that  nobody  born  by  a  women  will  hurt Macbeth. Macbeth then in 
the  same  act  and  scene,  line  93, states “Then live, Macduff; what need I fear of thee?” Since Macbeth 
killed  Macduff’s  family,  he  now  thinks  that  Macduff  can’t  do  anything to him because that’s what the 
witches  predicted.  In  act  5,  scene  8,  Macbeth  doesn’t  seem  to  fear  anything  when  he  fights  with 
Macduff.  But  the  unpredictable  happens  and  Macduff ended up beheading Macbeth. Since now that 
Macbeth  is  no  longer  alive,  his  role  of  being  King  of  Scotland  is  no  longer  available  and  Macduff 
becomes the new king.

In  conclusion,  a  lot  of  tragic  events  had  happened  during  the  play  of  ​Macbeth.  S
was  the  witches  that  are  to  blame,  others  say  it was Lady Macbeth but I believe that it was Macbeth. 
His  actions  caused  all  of those tragic events. Macbeth wanted to be king so he killed the former king, 
Duncan.  Banquo  was suspicious about Macbeth and he knew about the killing of Duncan so Macbeth 
send  out  servants  to  kill  Banquo  and  his son because he didn’t want Banquo to ruin his only chances 
of  becoming  king.  Later  on  Macbeth  kills  Macduff’s  sons  and  Lady  Macduff  because  he  wanted  to 
get  revenge  on  Macduff.  All  of  these  tragic  events  happened  because  Macbeth  wanted  to  be  king 
and didn’t want anybody to ruin his chances.
