Assignment No.1

Generation of High D.C and A.C Voltages

Date of Issue: 18/03/2019 Date of submission: 25/03/2019

Part-I Numericals

Ex. - 1 Determine the ripple voltage and regulation of a 10 stage Cockcroft-Walton type
dc voltage multiplier circuit having a stage capacitance = 0.01 µF, supply voltage =
100kV at a frequency of 400Hz and a load current = 10mA.

Ex. – 2 A voltage doubler circuit has C 1 = C2 = 0.015 µF and is supplied from a

voltage source of V= 100 sin 314 t kV. If the d.c. output current is to be 5 mA,
Calculate the output voltage and the ripple.

Ex. -3 A 250 kVA, 230V/250kV testing transformer has resistance and leakage reactance
of 1.5% and 6% respectively is to be used as a resonant transformer at 50Hz to test a
piece of cable at 500kV. Neglecting the dielectric loss of the cable, determine the series
inductance required if the load capacitance is 0.008 µF. What will be the input voltage
and power to be fed to the transformer if the inductor coil is assumed to have 2%
resistance based on the rating of the transformer?

Ex. - 4 A four-stage Cockcroft-Walton type dc voltage multiplier circuit with

capacitances all equal to 0.05 µF, is fed from 150kV. If 2mA of current is to be supplied
to the load by this circuit, determine (i) ripple (ii) the voltage drop and regulation if the
supply frequency is (i) 50Hz and (ii) 150Hz.

Part-II

QUESTIONS:

1. What is the principle of operation of a resonant transformer ?

2. What is a Tesla coil?
3. What is a Cascaded transformer? Why Cascading is done?
4. How are damped high frequency oscillations obtained from a Tesla coil ?
5. Why is a Cockcroft-Walton circuit preferred for voltage multiplier circuits?
6. Compare the performance of half wave rectifier and voltage doubler circuits
for generation of high d.c. voltages.
7. Give the expression for ripple and regulation in voltage multiplier circuits. How
are the ripple and regulation minimized?

Part-III

 List out the common test facilities available in high voltage

laboratories.
 List out the High voltage laboratories available in India

Part-I Numericals

Ex. -1 An impulse generator has 12 capacitors of 0.12 µF and 200 kV rating. The
wave front and wave tail resistances are 1.25 kΩ and 4 kΩ respectively. If the load
capacitance including that of the test object is 10000 pF, Find the wave front and
wave tail times and the peak voltage of impulse wave produced.

Ex. - 2 An impulse generator has 8 stages with each condenser rated for 0.12 µF and
150 kV. The load capacitor available is 1000 pF. Find the series resistance and the
damping resistance needed to produce 1.2/50 µs impulse wave. What is the
maximum output voltage of the generator, if the charging voltage is 120 kV ?

Ex. - 3 A 12-stage impulse generator has capacitors each rated at 0.35 µF, 150 kV. The
capacitance of the test specimen is 500pF. Determine the wave front and wave tail
resistances to produce a 1.2/50 µs impulse wave. Also determine the maximum output
voltage if the charging voltage is 125kV.

1. What do you mean by a 1.2 / 50 µs, 1000 kV, impulse wave?

2. Define the front and tail times of an impulse wave. What are the tolerances
allowed as per the specifications?
3. How are the wave front and wave tail times controlled in impulse
generator circuits ?
4. What is meant by energy rating of an impulse generator ?
5. What is Chopped impulse voltage?
6. What is a trigatron gap? State its functions.
