Chapter 5: FRUSTUMS AND TRUNCATED SOLIDS

Lesson 5.1 Frustum of a Regular Pyramid

A frustum of a regular pyramid is the portion of a regular pyramid included

between the base and a section parallel to the base

Properties of Frustum of a Regular Pyramid

1. The slant height of a frustum of a regular pyramid is the altitude of the

face.
2. The lateral edges of a frustum of a regular pyramid
are equal.
3. The Lateral faces of a frustum of a regular pyramid
are congruent isosceles trapezoid.
4. The altitude of a frustum of a regular pyramid is equal
to the length of the perpendicular line from the center
of the upper base to the center of the lower base.

FORMULAS

1. LATERAL AREA (LA) – one-half the sum of the perimeters of the bases multiplied by
the slant height.
𝟏
𝑳𝑨 = (𝑷𝟏 + 𝑷𝟐 )𝒍
𝟐

Where l = slant height

P1 and P2 = Perimeter of the lower base and upper base

2. SURFACE AREA or TOTAL SURFACE AREA (S A) – sum of its lateral area and the
areas of the bases
𝑺𝑨 = 𝑳𝑨 + 𝑩𝟏 + 𝑩𝟐
Where 𝐿𝐴 = lateral area
B1 and B2 = Area of the Lower and Upper Base

3. VOLUME – one-third the product of the altitude and the sum of the areas of the bases
and the mean proportional area between the bases.

𝟏
𝑽= 𝑩𝟏 + 𝑩𝟐 + 𝑩𝟏 𝑩𝟐 𝒉
𝟑
Where ℎ = height of the pyramid
B1 and B2 = Area of the Lower and Upper Base
Lesson 5.2 Frustum of a Right Circular Cone

A frustum of a right circular cone is the portion of the right circular cone included between
the base of the cone and the section made by the plane parallel to the base of the cone.

Properties of Frustum of a Right Circular Cone:

1. The slant height of a frustum of a right circular cone

is the same all throughout.
2. The altitude of a frustum of a right circular cone is
equal to the length of the perpendicular line
between the bases.

FORMULAS

1. LATERAL AREA (LA) – one-half the sum of the circumferences of the bases
multiplied by the slant height.
𝟏
𝑳𝑨 = (𝑪𝟏 + 𝑪𝟐 )𝒍
𝟐

Where l = slant height

P1 and P2 = Perimeter of the lower base and upper base

2. SURFACE AREA or TOTAL SURFACE AREA (S A) – sum of its lateral area and the
areas of the bases
𝑺𝑨 = 𝑳𝑨 + 𝑩𝟏 + 𝑩𝟐
Where 𝐿𝐴 = lateral area
B1 and B2 = Area of the Lower and Upper Base

3. VOLUME – one-third the product of the altitude and the sum of the areas of the bases
and the mean proportional area between the bases.

𝟏
𝑽= 𝑩𝟏 + 𝑩𝟐 + 𝑩𝟏 𝑩𝟐 𝒉
𝟑
Where ℎ = height of the pyramid
B1 and B2 = Area of the Lower and Upper Base
Lesson 5.3 Truncated Prisms and Cylinders

A truncated prism or truncated cylinder is the portion of a prism or cylinder between the base
and a section not parallel to the base which cuts all the lateral edges.

FORMULAS

1. VOLUME OF A TRUNCATED PRISM (V) – product of the area of the right section
and the average of the lateral edges. The right section is the section made by a plane
which is perpendicular to all the edges of the solid.
𝑽 = 𝑹𝒂
Where 𝑅 = area of the right section
a = average of the lateral edges

2. VOLUME OF A TRUNCATED CYLINDER (V) – product of the area of the right section
and the average of the elements.
𝑽 = 𝑹𝒂
Where 𝑅 = area of the right section
a = average of the elements
