Typological, Allegorical, and Analogical Methods Because They May Be Seen As Overlapping Each Other. It Was Used by Origen)

Typological interpretation deals with correspondences between divinely appointed people, events, and institutions within salvation history. It differs from allegorical interpretation by maintaining the historical connection between the Old and New Testaments. Typological interpretation presupposes a two-age view of history where Old Testament people, events, or things correlate to counterparts in the New Testament age of fulfillment.

Personal Comments: (in italics)

o (It uses historical facts as types of sort; used by Origen. There may be confusion between
typological, allegorical, and analogical methods because they may be seen as overlapping
each other. It was used by Origen)

o It is that form (or method) of biblical interpretation which deals with the correspondences
or analogies between traditions concerning divinely appointed persons, events, and
institutions, within the framework of the salvation history.

o Its difference with the allegorical method is that in its interpretation of the text,
(particularly the NT texts), the historical connection with the historical OT is maintained
rather than ignore it freely.

o It presupposes a two-eon view of history which correlates Old Testament persons, events,
or things with counterparts in the age of fulfillment (the New Testament). Some key
instances connect Adam with Christ (Rom. 5.12-21; 1Cor. 15.21-22, 45-49); Melchizedek and
Jesus (Heb. 7.1-17); Noah’s deliverance and Christian baptism (1Pet. 3.21). Thus, it is quite
difficult to differentiate between typology and allegory.
