COUNTERFORT

The counterfort is analyzed using StaadPro software. It has a maximum span moment of 20 tonne-meters and maximum support moment of 27 tonne-meters. The section considered is 450x750 mm with reinforcement of 4-25mm tor steel bars on each face. Strength calculations confirm the section is adequate to resist the design forces with an axial load of 50 tonnes, moment of 20 tonne-meters, and shear of 25 tonnes. Reinforcement provided at the support face is also sufficient based on limit state design method charts.

DESIGN OF COUNTERFORTS ( mkd C6, C9 & C12)

The counterforts are analysed by StaadPro software and the results are tabulated below :

REFER TO CW TANK FRAME.STD

(MEMB NO. 964 )
Maxm span moment = 20 tm (for load case 203)
Maxm support moment = 27 tm
Maxm shear at sides = 25 t
Axial load on column : 50 t (conservatively taken)
Counterforts at inside :

This beam is built monolithically with the side wall panel. Hence the flange action of the wall is considered while
performing uncracked stress check at waterace.
Beam section considered : 450 x 750 with reinft : 4 nos 25 tor tor bars at inface
and 4 nos 25 tor tor bars at outface
1400 1400
y 450 The design forces are :
inface Moment = 20tm ( with support moment
450 NA 450 Axial compr = 50t - tension at inface )
outace 300 Shear = 25t

19.63 cm2 19.63 cm2

Grade of conc. : M 25 Modular ratio = 10.98 Clear cover = 50 mm
For the above section,
Ae = 140 * 45 + 45 * 75 + 140 * 45
+ 9.98 * ( 19.63 + 19.63 )= 16366.8148 cm2
y=( 140 * 45 * 22.5 + 45 * 75 * 37.5 + 140 * 45
* 22.5 + 9.98 * ( 19.63 * 6.25 + 19.63 * 68.75 )/ Ae = 26 cm
INA= 1/12* 140 * 45 3+ 140 * 45 * 3.45 2
+ 1 / 12 * 45 * 75 3 +
45 * 75
* * 11.55 2+ 9.98 * ( 19.63 * 19.7 2
+ 19.63 * 42.8 2 )
+ 1/12* 140 * 45 3+ 140 * 45 * 3.45 2
= 4743386.902 cm4
Zinface = INA / 26 = 182789.48 cm3
Zoutface = INA / 49.1 = 96705.14 cm3
For axial compression Aeq = 45 * 75 + 8* 4.91 * 15.47 = 3983 cm2

sac,cal = 50 * 103 / Aeq = 12.6 kg/sq.cm < 60 kg/sq.cm

scbc,cal = 20 * 105/ Zoutface = 20.7 kg/sq.cm < 85 kg/sq.cm
scbt,cal = 20 * 105/ Zinface = 10.9 kg/sq.cm
Hence okay.

Strength Calculations at support :

For strength calculations refer charts 4.1 to 4.10 of Reinforced Concrete Design Handbook
by Chandra and Narayanan
Considering the section as rectangular, the following design parameters are obtained :-
P= 50 t. M= 20 tm
e = M/P = 0.4 m
sst = 1500 kg/cm2 .
scbc = 85 kg/cm2 . d1
modular ratio m = 10.98
Beam Section : B x D = 450 x 750
Clear cover = 50 mm
d1=750-50-10-25/2= 677.5 mm
d1 / D = 0.903

P / scbc.B.D = 50x10^3/(85x45x75)= 0.174

P.e / scbc.B.D2 = 50x0.4x10^5/(85x45x75^2)= 0.093
sst / (m.scbc ) = 1500/(10.98x85)= 1.61
Refer to Chart 4.1 of the Handbook , the zone falls below the dotted line
Hence refer to chart 4.6 ( as the stress in steel governs for strength design )
m.P / sst.B.D = 0.11
m.P.e / sst.B.D =
2
0.058
=> m.p = 0.01 => 0.001 => Ast reqd = 3.0738 cm2 .

Ast reqd per face = 1.537 cm2 . Provided Ast = 19.63 cm2 ./ face OK

Shear:
pt = 100x19.63/45x67.75= 0.644 % d= 677.5 mm
tc = 0.34 N/mm2. tc b.d.= 10.315 t.
With 4 Lgd 10 tor @ 200 c/c , Vus = 38.423 t.

Total shear capacity = 48.74 t. > Shear Force = 37.5t Hence okay.

AT BOTTOM SUPPORT
This face is checked in the Limit State Method as it is not in contact with water.

Moment at face of beam = 20 tm Axial load in column = 50t

Column size = 450 x 750 Clear cover = 40 mm

Pu / fck.B.D = 0.09 d' / D = 0.083

With actual provided reinforcement of 4 nos 25 tor tor bars at each face,p = 1.1637 % => p/fck = 0.0465

Refer to Chart 31 of SP-16, for p/fck = 0.047 Mu / fck.B.D2 = 0.06

=> Mu allowable = 38 tm > Mu actual = 30 tm Hence okay.
