Lesson 5: Standard Algorithm

Performance Objective: Given physical manipulatives, students will solve 3 out of 4 problems

correctly using the Standard Algorithm.

Resources or Materials Needed: Mid-point quick quiz, anchor chart, physical manipulatives,

multiplication chart, prepared practice problems (see Appendix A:1), exit ticket, Khan Academy

activities

Time: 60 minutes

Step 1 Pre-Instructional Activities: Give the mid-point quick quiz to learners to gauge how

they are doing using the two previously taught methods to solve multiplication. This is an

assessment but will be used as a quick review before learning the new and most commonly used

method. (See Appendix B:5)

Step 2: Content Presentation: Write the objective on the board. Show the first Math Antics

video focusing on multiplying a two-digit by on digit number using the Standard Algorithm.

Following video, the students will copy down steps as they are written on board.

These include:

 Line up numbers

 Multiply the two numbers in the ones place by each other.

 Multiply the top number in the tens digit by the bottom number in the ones digit.

Use the same problem (23 x 5) used in the previous two lessons (area model and partial product)

to keep it the same. Then show the second video focusing on multiplying multi-digit numbers.

Demonstrate this on the anchor chart following the video using the same problem (23x15). Ask

the students compare the exact same problem using different methods What is similar? What is

different? Have students write down these steps in their notebooks. When multiplying multi-digit

numbers, the steps are:


 Line up numbers

 Multiply the two numbers in the ones place.

 Multiply the top number in tens place by bottom number in ones place.

 Move to the second line under the first answer, add a zero (explain that we are now multiplying

the tens place so it is ten times bigger)

 Multiply the tope number in the ones place by the bottom number in the tens place.

 Multiply the top number in the tens place by the bottom number in the tens place.

 Add up both answers to get final answer.

Demonstrate this on the anchor chart following the video using the same problem (23x15). Ask

the students compare the exact same problem using different methods What is similar? What is

different? Have students write down these steps in their notebooks. Students will work through

this problem like this with the teacher. Then give the students a problem to solve independently

(see Appendix A:1) that must get checked off by teacher before proceeding to exit ticket.

Step 3: Feedback: Allow students to use

multiplication charts when solving problems.

Encourage students to use physical manipulatives

or pictures to represent the problem as needed.


Monitor and guide students through this method. This is the most abstract method out of all of

them. Check to make sure they are regrouping correctly, multiplying in the correct order and

adding the answers correctly at the end.

Step 4: Assessment: Exit ticket for standard algorithm. (See Appendix B:6)

Step 5: Practice: Direct the students to Khan Academy to continue with practicing this method

in context and with support as needed. Instruct them to complete Multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit

through Practice: Multiplying without regrouping.
