Converging Continental Two Continental Plates: Source: Plate Tectonics in Phet Simulation

The document provides information about different types of plate boundaries including convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. It includes links to simulations, videos and maps that illustrate these boundaries. Specifically, it mentions convergent boundaries between two continental plates and between a continental and oceanic plate. It also references divergent boundaries like mid-ocean ridges and examples like the East African Rift Valley. Transform boundaries are described as places where plates slide past one another, with examples given of the San Andreas Fault in California. Earthquake activity and the formation of new crust are highlighted as features of divergent plate boundaries.

Divergent Boundary

In plate tectonics, a divergent boundary or divergent plate boundary (also known as a
constructive boundary or an extensional boundary) is a linear feature that exists between two
tectonic plates that are moving away from each other. Divergent boundaries within continents
initially produce rifts which eventually become rift valleys. Most active divergent plate
boundaries occur between oceanic plates and exist as mid-oceanic ridges. Divergent boundaries
also form volcanic islands which occur when the plates move apart to produce gaps which molten
lava rises to fill. Current research indicates that complex convection within the Earth's mantle
allows material to rise to the base of the lithosphere beneath each divergent plate boundary.
This supplies the area with vast amounts of heat and a reduction in pressure that melts rock from
the asthenosphere (or upper mantle) beneath the rift area forming large flood basalt or lava
flows. Each eruption occurs in only a part of the plate boundary at any one time, but when it does
occur, it fills in the opening gap as the two opposing plates move away from each other.

Divergent Boundaries
What places have divergent boundaries?
Divergent boundaries are typified in the oceanic lithosphere by the rifts of the oceanic ridge
system, including the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the East Pacific Rise, and in the continental
lithosphere by rift valleys such as the famous East African Great Rift Valley.

eNotes.com
Examples of divergent boundaries
Examples of divergent boundaries are the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Great Rift
Valley. Iceland is an example of a country undergoing
a continental divergent boundary. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge divides Iceland and is the
boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Do earthquakes occur at divergent boundaries?

Earthquakes are located along the normal faults that form the sides of the rift or beneath the
floor of the rift. Divergent faults and rift valleys within a continental mass also host shallow‐
focus earthquakes. Shallow‐focus earthquakes occur along transform boundaries where two
plates move past each other.

What are the effects of divergent boundaries?

Effects that are found at a divergent boundary between oceanic plates include: a submarine
mountain range such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge; volcanic activity in the form of fissure eruptions;
shallow earthquake activity; creation of new seafloor and a widening ocean basin.
What type of earthquake occurs at a divergent boundary?
A divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other. Along
these boundaries, lava spews from long fissures and geysers spurt superheated water.
Frequent earthquakes strike along the rift. Beneath the rift, magma—molten rock—rises from
the mantle.
What causes divergent boundaries?
Divergent boundaries in the middle of the oceans cause seafloor spreading. As the oceanic
plates move apart they produce cracks in the ocean floor. Magma rises up from the mantle and
oozes out from the cracks like a long, thin undersea volcano. This magma cools to form a new
crust of igneous rock.

What landforms are associated with transform boundaries?

TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY

Transform Plate Boundaries are locations where two plates slide past one another.
The fracture zone that forms a transform plate boundary is known as a transform fault. Most
transform faults are found in the ocean basin and connect offsets in the mid-ocean ridges.

What is formed at transform boundaries?

Transform boundaries are places where plates slide sideways past each other. Attransform
boundaries lithosphere is neither created nor destroyed. Manytransform boundaries are
found on the sea floor, where they connect segments of diverging mid-ocean ridges. California's
San Andreas fault is a transform boundary.
