High Rise Structures

The document discusses different types of high-rise building structures. It provides two case studies of specific high-rise buildings that use different structural systems: the Sears Tower in Chicago, which uses a bundled tube structure of 9 steel frames forming tubes, and the John Hancock Building in Chicago, which uses a braced tube structure with distinctive X bracings on the exterior connecting to columns to resist wind forces. In total, the document outlines 7 main types of high-rise structural frames and provides details on two landmark Chicago skyscrapers that exemplify different frame systems.

REPORT ON HIGH RISE

STRUCTURES
ABCM
HIGH RISE STRUCTURES

A high rise building in any structure of height more than 35m or greeter in height.
Generally constructed using structural frame, provided using high speed elevators.
Originally constructed for commercial purpose, now they are planned for multiple
purposes.

Depending on structural frames mainly divided into 7 types;

1. Staggered truss
2. Rigid frame
3. Rigid frame and core
4. Trussed frame
5. Belt trussed frame
and core
6. Tube in tube
7. Bundled tube

CASE STUDY 1:
BUNDLE TUBE STRUCTURES- SEARS TOWER, CHICAGO
LOCATION – Chicago
COMPLETION- 1974
NO OF STOREYS- 110
Second tallest building in United States

This tower consists of four parallel rigid steel

frames in each orthogonal direction
interconnected to form nine bundled tubes.
Its strength is drawn from its structural form which is Bundled tube. The building plan
has 9 squares each 75 feet across placed in 3 by 3 grid arrangement.

Each square has 5 columns per side spaced 15

feet on centres. As the columns rise up each
square in the plan forms a tube which can be
seen on the exterior of the building.

CASE STUDY 2:
BRACED TUBE STRUCTURES- JOHN HANCOCK BUILDING
LOCATION- Chicago
BUILT IN- 1970
NO OF FLOORS- 100
Tallest building in Chicago till 1973

The structure has diagonal bracings which are tied

together. This building has distinctive X bracings
which has made it an architectural icon. It also
increases the flexibility by eliminating interior
columns between the core and the perimeter.
Construction done mainly in steel.
Diagonal bracings are connected to exterior
columns which made it easier to resist the wind
forces
In case of braced tube, the external columns are merged
with external bracings or with girders so as to form a vast
rigid tube. This system is particularly effective and also
economical. This is mainly because of the equal
distribution of bracings on the external façade which
distributes the load.
