The song tells the story of a man who has faced constant trouble in his life. He bids farewell to his home of Kentucky where he was born and raised. For six years he has been in trouble and found no pleasure in life. He has no friends to help him and is bound to wander. He expects to never see his old lover again and may die while traveling on a northern railroad. His body can be buried in a deep valley where he may lay for many years. Though his friends may see him as a stranger, he promises to meet his lover again on God's golden shore in the afterlife.
