Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This lesson will aid students who need visual representation of
identifying the main topic and key details. Allowing students to use the computer to create a concept map will
help students who have trouble with writing also.
Lesson idea implementation:
Teacher will explain to students that they will be creating a digital concept map using bubbl.us. The teacher
will then explain to students that they will be identifying the main topic of the story and 5 key details that
support the main topic. Once the teacher has explained the concept map the students and teacher will have a
copy of the book the three little pigs. The teacher will read aloud as the students follow alone. After the story
is read, the student will each get their assigned chrome book, log on, and go to bubbl.us. Students will then
be instructed on how to create bubbles. Once the bubbles are created students will type the information
needed in each. This project should take about 45 minutes to an hour given that these are 1st grade students.
The lesson will be concluded by allowing a few students to share their maps on the smart board and explain
to the class their maps.

Once the project is finished, the teacher will assess each finished product using a rubric that will include
whether or not students were able to identify the main topic and key details and creativity. The data will be
used to identify students who need more practice on main topic and key idea. Students who are ready to
move on will then create their own story ensuring that they have a centralized topic and key details
supporting their topic.
Reflective Practice: Students will enjoy this lesson because they will have a chance to use technology and not
just pencil and paper. It also allows student to be creative and add their own uniqueness, making them eager
to complete and share their final product.
