Lesson Plan

This lesson plan outlines a math lesson for identifying the volume of rectangular prisms. The objective is to find the volume of rectangular prisms. The lesson will include drilling students on key terms, reviewing area formulas, demonstrating how to find the volume of sample rectangular prisms using the formula V=l×w×h, and having students solve practice problems. Students will work in groups on activities involving calculating volumes of different rectangular prisms. An evaluation with multiple choice questions will assess student understanding. Homework assignments involve calculating volumes of additional rectangular prisms.

Lesson Plan

in Math 4

I. Objective

Identify the volume of rectangular prism.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: Volume of a Rectangular Prism

Reference: K-12 Curriculum Guide M4ME-IVe64 Mathematics 4. Page 233 – 236
Materials: Cartolina, Construction Paper, Marker and Book
Value Focus: Unity

III. Procedure

A. Drill
- Class I have here a flashcards. Read it carefully.

Rectangular Vertex Edge

Cube Volume Multiply

Length Width Height

B. Review
- Class we’ve tackled last meeting about area of rectangle. Who can give me
the formula we can use to find the area of a rectangle.

C. Lesson Proper
1. Motivation
- Class, have you ever played a Jigsaw Puzzle?
- I have 4 sets of jigsaw puzzle here. Each group will be given one set of it. Form the
puzzle as fast as you can. The fastest who can form the puzzle and post it on the board is the
winner of the game. The winner will be receive an additional 10 points in our test later.
(Remember that you should work as a group/team. The noisy group/s will be disqualified to our
game.)
- After the 3 – 5 minutes declare the winner
- What kind of spatial figure you have formed?

A Rectangular Prism

2. Presentation of Lesson

A Rectangular Prism
- Class lets discuss the finding the volume of a rectangular prism.
- A Rectangular prism is a solid figure that has six faces, twelve edges ad eight
vertices.
- Vertex (vertices in plural form) is the corner of a shape.
- Edge is a segment where two faces of a prism meet.
- Some rectangular prisms have faces that are shaped like rectangles and squares.

Height

Width

Length
Volume = length x width x height
side = 3 x 3 x 3 =27 cubic units
Answer: There are 27 cubic units
- The box below is in the shape of a rectangular prism. It contains cubes arranged in
rows, columns, and layers. What the volume of the prism?

How many rows of cubes are there?

How many columns of cubes are there?
How many layers of cubes are there?
- A cube also has six faces, twelve edges, and eight vertices. Each face is shaped like
a square with equal lengths of sides.

3 rows of 3 cubes
9 cubes in all

3 layers of 3 rows of 3 cubes

27 cubes in all
3 cm
3cm
3cm

- For the example:

Height (3 units)
Width (2 units)

length (4units)

4 rows of 2 cubes
3 layers of 4 rows of 2 cubes
24 cubes in all
- You count the number of cubes to get the volume of the rectangular prism.
- You can also multiply the number of rows by the number of columns and by the
number of layers to find the volume.
V = 4 rows x 2 columns x 3 layers
= 24 cubes
- Let V be the volume of a rectangular prism. If l is the length, w is the width and h is
the height of the rectangular prism.
V=lxwxh
=4x2x3
= 24 cubic units
- Therefore, the volume of the rectangular prism is 24 cubic units.
3. Generalization
- What are the three dimensions of a rectangular prism?
(L, W, H)
- How do we get the volume of a rectangular prism?
(By using the formula V=l x w x h)

4. Application
- Class I will group you into 4 groups. Each group will be given one activity.
1.

10 cm

5 cm
5 cm

2. 3 cm

5 cm

10 cm

3.
2 cm

3 cm
5 cm

IV. Evaluation
Choose the correct answer.
1. The ____________ has three dimensions.
A. Rectangular Prism
B. Edge
C. Cube
D. Vertex
2. There are three dimensions in the rectangular prism, except:
A. Length
B. Width
C. Height
D. Base

3. What is the correct formula of the rectangular prism?

A. A=b x h
B. V=l x w x h
C. A=l x w
D. A= (b1+b2) x h

4. Solve the problem: A toy box is in the shape of a rectangular prism. It is 10 cm long and 5
cm high. If its width is 10 cm. What is the volume?
A. 600 cm
B. 400 cm
C. 500 cm
D. 700 cm

V. Assignment

Direction: Solve the following problems. Write the answers in your notebook.
1. A wooden box is 24 cm long, 18 cm wide, and 9 cm high. How much space does it
enclose?
2. A refrigerator has a square base with each side that measures 60 cm and stands 122 cm.
Find the volume of the refrigerator.

3. The length of a rectangular prism is 6 cm and the width is 4 cm while it stands 3 cm. What is
the volume?
