INFANT INCUBATOR
OPERATOR’S MANUAL
General Information
Introduction
This manual provides instructions for installation, use, operator maintenance of the Air-
shields C100 infant incubator. Air-shields cannot be responsible for the performance
and safety of the incubator if the user does not operate the unit in accordance with the
instructions, fails to follow the maintenance recommendations of this manual or effects
any repairs with unauthorized components. Calibration and repair should be performed
only by qualified service personnel.
This manual should be read, thoroughly understood, and readily accessible to all
personnel who will be working with the unit. The manual should be stored with the
incubator when not in use.
Description
The infant incubator model C100, is intended for high risk, premature, low birth-weight,
or critically ill newborns. It provides a means to control air temperature, oxygen
concentrations and relative humidity. A double walled hood permits full visibility and
provides an effective thermal barrier from the environment. Accessibility to the infant is
provided by an access panel, access doors, and iris entry ports. When the access
panel is open, a curtain of warm air flows from beneath the front edge of the mattress
toward the top of access panel opening; this air shield minimizes the temperature drop
within the hood environment.
On the model C100, skin or air temperature control is selected by a front panel control.
Instrumentation includes digital displays for temperature, LEDs for relative indication of
heater output, and a comprehensive visual and audible alarm system which includes an
alarm test feature.
Accessories
Optional accessories available for use with the incubator are illustrated in Figure 1.1.

Check the power failure alarm
Before connecting the incubator to the power source, press the power switch; the power
failure alarm should sound and the power fail alarm indicator on the controller should
light. This tests the operation of the power failure alarm circuit. Press the power switch
a second time to turn off and silence the alarm.
Connect the AC power cord directly to the incubator when mounted on a standard
cabinet stand
Or
Connect the AC power cord to the VHA stand ac power outlet when the incubator is
mounted on a VHA stand (Optional). The incubator power cord should be connected to
the VHA stand receptacle to prevent accidental disconnection or damage when the
incubator is raised or lowered.
Depress the power switch on the incubator. When on, the switch is illuminated. When
initially turned on, the unit performs a self-test. All indicator lamps light, the audible
alarm is pulsed, the digital displays shows eights (88.8) and then automatically sets on
room temperature.
Set the desired temperature on air mode and allow the unit to operate until the digital
display maintains its number on the required set point temperature. Once stabilized, the
incubator temperature will be maintained with 0.5°C of the set temperature.
The heater output indicator lights illuminated provides an indication of the amount of
heater output to maintain the incubator air temperature.
Connect the plug of the skin temperature probe to the patient probe receptacle found on
the side panel of the controller. Insert the probe into the hood compartment through the
tubing access ports found at the lower side of the hood. Before the probe is placed on
the skin, thoroughly clean and dry the skin area where the probe is to be placed. When
the infant is prone, place the probe on the infant’s back.
Warning: Never place the skin temperature probe under the infant or use it
rectally.
Warning: The skin temperature probe must be in intimate contact with the skin to
provide accurate monitoring of the infant’s skin temperature. Failure to maintain
intimate skin contact can result in over-heating and possible burning. Check
infant’s condition at least every fifteen minutes for correct sensor attachment and
feel the infant’s skin for signs of over-heating.
Set the skin temperature to the prescribed temperature. Once stabilized, the infant
probe temperature will be automatically controlled within 0.3°C of the set temperature.
Oxygen
Connect the output of the oxygen flow meter to the nipple of the oxygen input valve
using 3/16-inch ID surgical tubing. This can be found at the air input filter cover on the
back of the incubator.
Improper use of supplemental oxygen can cause serious side effects including
blindness, brain damage and death. The risks vary with each infant. The
method, the concentration and the duration of oxygen administration should be
prescribed by the attending physician.
Humidity reservoir can be found at the left side of the incubator. If additional
humidification is prescribed by the attending physician, fill the humidity reservoir with
2000 cc of sterile distilled water. A single filling is enough for at least one full day of
operation, relative humidity inside the incubator is typically 50-60% under these
conditions.
Important:
Never refill a partially filled humidity reservoir; always drain completely before
refilling.
