Working
• The potential energy of various types of fuels (fossil,
nuclear, or renewable) is converted into another form of
energy (usually mechanical or heat energy).
Power Plants
2/18/2019 8
Classification
Power Plants are classified by the type of fuel and the type
of prime mover installed.
Power Plants

Classification
• Fossil Fuel ( Thermal)
• Nuclear
• Renewable
(Solar, Geothermal, Wind, Tidal, Hydro)
Power Plants

Introduction
• Thermal power stations, Mechanical power is produced
by heat engine, which transforms thermal energy, often
from combustion of a fuel into rotational energy.
Power Plants

Introduction
• Nuclear power plants use a nuclear reactor’s heat to
operate a steam generator.
Power Plants
2/18/2019 12
Introduction
• Fossil fuel power plants also use a steam turbine or in
case of Natural gas fired plants use a gas turbine.
• Geothermal Power Plants use steam extracted from hot
underground rocks.
Power Plants

Introduction
By Prime Mover
• Steam Turbine Plants use the pressure generated by
expanding steam to turn the turbine’s blades.
• Gas turbine plants
