Respiratory System Notes - KEY

The respiratory system provides oxygen to the body and removes carbon dioxide. It includes the nose, mouth, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, lungs and diaphragm. The nose and mouth take in air, which travels through the trachea to the lungs. In the lungs, oxygen passes into the bloodstream in the alveoli and carbon dioxide moves out, with the diaphragm aiding breathing movements.

The Respiratory System

The respiratory system provides the oxygen that humans need to survive. Oxygen combines with
glucose (sugar) to provide energy for the body in a process known as respiration. The cells release
carbon dioxide as waste, and it is removed from the body. The following table lists some of the
structures of the respiratory system along with their functions:

Structure Function
nose and mouth openings air entry; warms & filters air
trachea (windpipe) tube in throat air pathway to lungs
bronchi & bronchioles tubes - 1 bronchi branches
into each lung and 1000’s of carry oxygen to air sacs, called
bronchioles split from each alveoli
bronchi
lungs 2 – sponge like – contain the main organs in system – site of
bronchioles and alveoli (large-scale) CO2 – O2 exchange
alveoli tiny sacs branching of surrounded by capillaries for
bronchioles CO2 – O2 exchange
diaphragm dome-shaped muscle below contracts and air is pulled into
lungs lungs; relaxes and air is pushed
out of lungs

Pathway of Air
The following flow chart traces the pathway of oxygen and carbon-dioxide through the respiratory
system:

air enters through the mouth and nose where it is warmed, filtered and moistened

enters trachea

enters bronchi and bronchioles of each lung

enters alveoli (within lungs)

capillaries surrounding alveoli

oxygen – carbon dioxide exchanged at the cellular level

carbon dioxide moves back through the respiratory system to be exhaled
