DSLP (Control Room) Dhamrai

The document provides calculations to determine the appropriate lightning protection for a 33kV control room using a single mast, two masts, and four masts according to IEEE standards. For a single mast, the allowable strike distance is 15.064m and equipment up to 1.813m from the mast and 7.9m high would be protected. For two masts, equipment would be protected out to 14.327m between masts. For four masts, the maximum diagonal distance between masts is 25.6526m and equipment would be protected within this zone.

DIRECT STROKE LIGHTNING PROTECTION CALCULATION

CALCULATION IS DONE ACCORDING TO IEEE GUIDE FOR DIRECT

LIGHTNING STROKE SHIELDING OF SUBSTATIONS(IEEE STD 998-2012)
USING ROLLING SPHERE METHOD

Calculation for single mast protection of 33kV control room: (According to section
B.4.3).

Basic impulse level in KV, (BIL) = 170KV (Indian standard)

Nominal system voltage = 33KV
Allowable stroke current, ( ) = 2KA [Section 6.3.6]
Co-efficient to account for different striking distances to a mast, (K) = 1.2 [According
to section 6.2.1 for mast]

The allowable strike distance is obtained by the eqn.

.
= 8 … … … (Equation 17)

Where,
Allowable strike distance or sphere radius, (S) = 15.064m
Height of Mast, (H) = 15.064m (Assumed mast height)
Equipment height to be protected, (A) = 7.9m

Horizontal distance from origin of sphere (OOS) to equipment is obtained by the

equation.

= −( − )

Horizontal distance from origin of sphere (OOS) to equipment, (C) = 13.2514603m

According to drawing, horizontal distance from origin of sphere (OOS) to equipment is
= 13.251m
So, Equipment is under protected zone of sphere.
Maximum separation from mast to equipment for protection is obtained by the equation.

= −

Maximum separation from mast to equipment for protection, (T) =1.813m

According to drawing, mast to equipment separation is = 1.813m
So, equipment at a height of 7.9m is protected for a single mast.

DIRECT STROKE LIGHTNING PROTECTION CALCULATION

Maximum distance between two masts for side stroke: (According to section B.4.3)

Horizontal distance from origin of sphere (OOS) to equipment is obtained by the

equation.

= −( − )

Horizontal distance from origin of sphere (OOS) to equipment, (W) = 13.2514603m

Maximum phase to steel clearance, (Y) = 0m

Horizontal distance between OOS & line drawn between two masts is obtained by the
equation.

= −

Horizontal distance between OOS & line drawn between two masts, (Z) =13.2514603m

Half the separation between two masts is obtained by the equation.

= √ −

Half the separation between two masts, (L) = 7.163999994m

Maximum separation between two masts is obtained by the equation.

= 2

Maximum separation between two masts, (X) = 14.32799999m

According to drawing, separation between two masts is = 14.322m which is less than
the maximum separation range achieved from calculation.
So, equipment is under protection at a range of 14.327999m between two masts.

DIRECT STROKE LIGHTNING PROTECTION CALCULATION

Maximum distance between masts for vertical stroke sphere supported by four
masts: (According to section B.4.3)

D must be less than or equal to (H-A) for protection of height A.

Elevation difference between mast & equipment/bus is obtained by the equation.

= −

Elevation difference between mast & equipment/Bus, (D) = 7.164m

According to drawing, Elevation difference between mast & equipment is 7.164m
which is equal to (H-A) =7.164m
So, Mast height is enough from protection perspective.

Elevation difference between mast & OOS is obtained by the equation.

= −

Elevation difference between mast & OOS, (E) =7.9m

According to drawing, difference between mast & OOS is 13.239m which keeps
equipment under the protection sphere.

Horizontal distance between OOS & mast is obtained by the equation.

J = √ −

Horizontal distance between OOS & mast, (J) = 12.826m

Maximum diagonal distance between masts when four masts support the sphere is
obtained by the equation.

= 2

Diagonal distance between masts when four masts support the sphere, (K) =25.6526m
According to drawing, diagonal distance between masts when four masts support the
sphere is = 21.962m which is within the maximum diagonal distance between masts
achieved from calculation.
From above calculation, it can be said that control room is under protected zone.
