Synthetic Division

The lesson plan provides instruction on teaching synthetic division to students. It includes objectives, subject matter, procedures, and an evaluation. The lesson will take 60 minutes and involve defining synthetic division, identifying related terms, and having students practice dividing polynomials using synthetic division through group activities and sample problems. The teacher will present the method, demonstrate examples, and have students complete similar problems to reinforce their understanding of this shortcut technique for polynomial division.

Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 10

I. Objectives

At the end of the 60 minutes lesson, the students are expected to do the following with 75% level of
proficiency.

1. Define synthetic division.

2. Identify the divisor, dividend, quotient and remainder.
3. Divide polynomials using synthetic division.

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Dividing Polynomials – Synthetic Division

B. Reference: Mathematics Learner’s Module
Grade 10 Pages 60 - 62
C. Materials: Power Point, chalk and board
D. Values to be integrated: cooperation, participation

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity
A. Preliminary
Activities

1. Assignment No assignment

2. Review Last time we discussed the division of polynomial by using Long division.
Now let us recall your knowledge in dividing polynomials.

We already know that the procedure for dividing a polynomial by another

polynomial is similar to the procedure used when dividing whole numbers.

The only difference is that in division of polynomials we also deal with the
variables and exponents.

Example:

Any questions? If none, we may now proceed with the next lesson. But
Before that let’s have a quick activity.

3. Motivation Groupings

Let’s go to the beach.

Help the family to find their way to the beach, and then post your outputs
on the board. (5 minutes).

Did you have fun doing the activity?

(Asked each group of what they can say or think about the activity. Show
them on how I found the way to the beach.)

We all love shortcuts! Just like with division of polynomials we have a

shortcut method. And what do we call that method?

B. Presentation of the
New Lesson

1. Discussion Synthetic division is a shortcut method for dividing polynomial by a simple

binomial of the form (x – r).

Synthetic division uses only the coefficients of a polynomial.

Example 1. Use synthetic division to divide

(3x3 + 4x2 + 8) / (x + 2)

1. Arrange the coefficients in descending powers of x, placing 0s for

the missing terms.

2. Place the value of r in the upper left corner. In this example, x – r =

x + 2 = x – (–2), so r = -2

3. Bring the first coefficient down below.

4. Multiply the divisor r by the number below the horizontal line, and
place the result above the line below the next coefficient.

5. Add the column to get the next coefficient in your answer.

6. Repeat the steps 4 and 5, filling each column from left to right until
you get to the end of the coefficients.

7. Write the quotient. Note that the degree of the quotient is one less
than the degree of the dividend. The entries in the third row give the
coefficients of the quotient and the remainder.
2. Activity
Group Activity

Use synthetic division to find the quotient in each of the following

polynomial division.

1. (5x3 + 3x – 8) / (x – 1)

2. (x4 + 5x3 + 2x2 +7x + 30) / (x + 2)

3. (2x3 – 54) / (x – 3)

4. (-3x3 + x2 – 208) / (x + 4)

5. (2x3 + x2 – 7x – 240) / (x – 5)

C. Generalization Synthetic division is a shortcut method for dividing polynomial by a simple

binomial of the form (x – r).

Synthetic division uses only the coefficients of a polynomial.

Always remember the equation must be in standard form, and then we

follow the steps, bring down, multiply and add.

To master more of your skills in Synthetic division, let’s have another

activity.
IV. Evaluation

Divide using synthetic division.

1. (x2 + x – 2) / (x – 1)

2. (4x3 + 5x2 -6x – 4) / (x + 2)

3. (3x2 + 7x – 20) / (x + 5)

4. (x4 – 256) / (x – 4)

5. (x2 – 5x – 5x3 + x4 + 5) / (5 + x)
