Task Analysis: How to Create a Classroom Page on Canvas

I am doing my task analysis about how to create a classroom webpage on the Canvas platform.
Teachers at my school are required to have a webpage up and running on canvas. I will teach
how to add documents, videos and URLs, and quizzes to a Canvas webpage. There are other
options someone could add once they get the hang of these basic components.

1.0 Set up a Module

1.1 Login to Canvas
1.2 Click the blue +Module button
1.3 Write Module Name in appropriate box
1.4 Click blue Add Module button
2.0 Add Content to Module
2.1 Click + button next to module name
2.2 Choose correct option in drop down menu next to word Add
2.3 Name the content you are adding in appropriate box
2.4 Click blue Add Item button
3.0 Editing Content in Module
3.1 Click on module name
3.2 Click on item you want to edit
3.3 If it can be edited, a button that says Edit will be at the top
3.4 When finished editing, click the blue Save button
4.0 Publishing your page
4.1 Click on Home
4.2 Click the circles next to each module (should turn green)
4.3 Click the green Publish button at the top of the page

Script
Step 1: Login to your canvas account by click login on the left side bar. Once you enter your
username and password, you will see your dashboard.

Step 2: To create a new class, click Start a New Course, found on the right hand side of the
dashboard. A screen will pop up where you will enter the course name and choose if it will be a
private or public page.

Step 3: After you have created the course, you will see a page with a list of options on the left
and right hand sides. I am organizing my page into modules, which is easy for students to
navigate. Click the link in the middle of the page that says Create a new Module. Name your
module and click add module.

Step 4: To add material to your module, click the plus sign next to the name of the module. For
this module, I am adding word documents. Once you click the plus sign, you will see a screen to
choose what you are adding. Assignment is chosen by default. Click on the drop down arrow in
the box that says assignment to choose what you want to add. I am choosing file to add the
syllabus, course schedule, lab safety agreement, and course rules and procedures. After you click
file, a screen will pop up with more options. Click on the Choose File box, and then choose the
file you want to add and click Add Item. Repeat for as many files as you want to add.

Step 5: Next, click on the blue +Module button to add another module. I am adding the first
module of content to my page. To begin this module, I will add a link to a Study Jams video. I
will add the module as I did with the previous one. Then, click on the + button next to the
module name. In the box next to add, select External URL from the drop down menu. Then,
enter the URL for the video you want your students to watch. Add a page name, whatever you
want to show up fo the video, and click the blue add item button.

Step 6: You can also add a discussion. Click on the + sign next to the module. Select discussion
from the drop down menu. Then, click on New Topic if it is not already selected. Enter a topic
name in the appropriate box. Click Add Item. Now, you can click on the discussion topic under
the module. Once the topic is open, click the edit button. Here, you can add more detail to the
discussion prompt. Once you have made adjustments you want, click the Save button at the
bottom of the page.

Step 7: You can add a quiz over the content published on your Canvas page. Select the + button
next to the module you want the quiz to be in. Select quiz from the dropdown menu, select new
quiz, and then fill in the Quiz Name box and click the blue Add Item button at the bottom.

Step 8: To edit your quiz, click on it and click the Edit button at the top right. Here, you can add
quiz directions, type, how answers are displayed, time limit, etc… To add questions to the quiz,
click the box that says Questions at the top of the page, next to the details box. Here, you can add
questions and answer choices.

Step 9: Once you’ve added all your content. Click on home and click the circles next to each
module name. Once those circles are green, click the Publish button in the upper right hand
corner. Your webpage is now running.
