Supplementary Problems Maxima - Minima and Time Rates

The document contains 23 math problems involving concepts related to maxima, minima, rates of change, and geometry. The problems involve finding maximum or minimum values of quantities like perimeter, area, or amount of material needed given certain constraints. They also involve calculating rates of change for variables like water level, shadow length, or distance between objects based on how other values are changing with respect to time. The problems provide quantitative information about shapes, volumes, speeds, flow rates, and other variables to determine the requested unknown values.

1. The sum of two numbers is S. What is the minimum value of the sum of their squares?
2. The hypotenuse of a right triangle is 14 m. Find its perimeter if its area is a maximum.
3. An open cylindrical tank was built with minimum surface area. Find the ratio of its height to its radius.
4. The highway department is planning to build a picnic area for motorist along a major highway. It is to be
rectangular with an area of 5000 sq meters is to be fenced off on the three sides not adjacent to the highway.
What is the least amount of fencing that will be needed to complete the job?
5. The angle between the sides of a triangle 8 cm and 12 cm long is changing causing the area to change at a
constant rate of 45c m2/min. What rate is the angle changing when the angle is 30o?
6. How fast is the surface area of a sphere changing when the radius is 25 cm if the radius is changing at the rate
of 1 mm/s?
7. How fast is the surface area of a cube changing when the edge is 30 cm if the edge is changing at the rate of
3mm/s?
8. The upper end of a 3 m ladder leans against a vertical wall while the lower end is on a level concrete pavement
extending to the wall. The lower end slides away at a constant rate of 2 cm/s. How fast is the upper end moving
down on the wall in cm/s when the lower end is 2 m away from the wall?
9. Water flows into a conical vessel at a constant rate of Q cm3/s. The vessel has a height of 18 cm and a diameter
of 10 cm at the top. When the water is 12 cm deep, the water level is rising at the rate of 0.115 cm/s. Find the value
of Q.
10. Water flows into a conical vessel at a constant rate of 0.5 m3/min. The vessel has a height of 6 m and a top
diameter of 2 m. At what depth in m will the water level be rising at the rate of 5.73 m/min?
11. A balloon leaves the ground 18 m from an observer and rises vertically at 1.25 m/s. How fast in m/s is the balloon
receding from the observer after 8 seconds?
12. A closed cylindrical tank has a capacity of 50.625 m 3. Determine the radius of the cylindrical tank that requires
minimum amount of material used.
13. A box having a square base and open top is to be made with the least amount of material. What should be the
base edge in meters if the volume is to be 32 m3?
14. What is the area in m2 of the rectangle of maximum perimeter inscribed in a circle having a diameter of 10 m?
15. A car at 2:00 PM start westward at 30 kph. At 4:00 PM, another car starts northward from the same point at 45
kph. How fast are the two cars separating at 6:00 PM?
16. Find two positive numbers whose product is 64, and whose sum is a minimum.
17. A figure consists of a rectangle surmounted by a semi-circle, the diameter of the semi-circle coinciding with the
upper base of the rectangle. The perimeter of the figure is 35.708 m. Find the altitude of the rectangle if the area
of the figure is maximum.
18. A rectangular box with a square base and open top is to be made from a 432 sq m of materials. Determine the
height of the largest box that can be made.
19. An open box is formed from a piece of cardboard 12 inches square by cutting equal squares out of the corners
and turning up the sides. Find the volume of the largest box that can be made this way.
20. Water is allowed to flow into an empty conical tank at a constant rate of 0.03 m3/min. At what rate in m/min
is the water level rising when the water is 0.50 m deep?
21. Water at the rate of 10 cm3/min is pouring into a leaky cistern whose shape is a cone 16 cm deep and 8 cm in
diameter at the top. At the time the water is 12 cm deep, the water level is observed to be rising 1/3 cm per min.
