Exercise-3 CSTR Dynamic PDF

The document describes a dynamic simulation of a continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR) in Aspen HYSYS. It involves: 1) Conducting an initial steady-state simulation of a CSTR process. 2) Converting the steady-state model to a dynamic model and adding controllers to manipulate process variables over time. 3) Running simulations where the controller setpoints are changed to analyze the impact on product stream properties over 5 hours of runtime.

Dynamic Analysis of a CSTR with Aspen HYSYS

Step-1 Steady State Simulation :

Simulates the production of propylene glycol from water and propylene oxide

• Component :
o propylene oxide (12C3Oxide)
o water (H2O)
o propylene glycol (12-C3diol)
o Nitrogen (N2)
• Fluid Packages : UNIQUAC
• Reaction

• Stream : PreFeed
• VLV-FEED, VLV-PROD : dP = 5 psi
• Reactor
Step-2 Equipment Sizing :
1. Valves : VLV-FEED, VLV-PROD
2. Reactor

Step-3 Boundary stream :

1. PreFeed, Reactor Vent, PRODUCT select the Pressure Specifications

Step-4 Controllersand Strip charts:

Add Controllers
1. Flow Controller that will control the PreFeed Feed Flowrate to the Reactor
• Connections
• Parameters

• Face Plate
2. Level Controller to control the amount of liquid in theReactor
• Connections

• Parameters
• Face Plate

3. Temperature Controllerto control the temperature of the Reactor by

manipulating the Coolant stream
• Connections
• Parameters

• Face Plate
Add Strip Charts
• Strip Chart 1 : PRODUCT (Temperatur, Pressure,Molar Flow)

Click Create Stripchart

• Strip chart2 : Valve Opening VLV-FEED, VLV-PROD(percentage open)

Save file Exercise-2CSTR steady.hsc and copy/safe as Exercise-2CSTR

dynamic.hsc
Step-5 Tranform Steady State to Dynamic :

• Open file Exercise-2 CSTR Dynamic.hsc

• In the Dynamics tab of the Ribbon, click on the Dynamics Assistant button

To tranform Steady State to Dynamic, click on the Dynamics Mode button and
click Yes.

Scenarios :
• We will be running the following sequence:
Run the dynamic simulation for 2 hours
Change the Level Controller (LIC-100) set point to 60%
Run the dynamic simulation for 3 additional hours; find how the product
stream results are being affected

Right click on the black plot area of strip PRODUCT, Valve Opening and
select Graph Control. In the Axes window, check the Automatic Auto Scale
and Show All boxes
Move to the Time Axis tab. Click the Set-up Logger button, and enter 900 in
the Logger Size field. This will cause the logger to keep 900 points, taken at
20 second intervals, which translates to 5 hours of runtime.

• Runthe simulation for 2 hour

Click on the Integrator button in the Dynamics tab of the Ribbon,In the End
Time field, enter 2 hour (120 minutes)
First hit the Reset button in the Dynamics ribbon to reset the integrator, then
click Run to run the simulation

• Over the course of 1 hour, ramp the NGL feed from 200 m3/h
(116.900 kg/h) to 100.000 kg/h
The next step is to ramp the NGL Feed down to 100.000 kg/hr over an
hour. Double click on NGL-FC and move to the Parameters | Advanced
page. In the Set Point Ramping section, click Enable to enable ramping of
the tuner. Change the Target SP to 100.000 kg/h and Ramp Duration to 1
hour (60 minutes).

Open the Integrator window again, and change the End Time to 2 hours.
Run the simulation.
• Run the simulation for 1 hour
Open the Integrator, and change End Time to 3 hours. Run the simulation

• Over the course of 1 hour, ramp the NGL feed up to 130.000 kg/h
Set the SP of NGL-FC to Ramp up to 130.000 kg/hin 1 hour. Open the
Integrator window, and change End Time to 4 hours, then Run the
simulation.
• Run the simulation for 1 hour
Open the Integrator, and change End Time to 5 hours. Run the simulation
