1.4.7 Precision Approaches - Radio Altimeter.: EMB AOM Volume 1 Approach-Landing-Go Around 9

This document provides guidance on precision approaches, specifically CAT II approaches, and flight confidence checks (FCC). It defines radio altimeter settings for CAT I and CAT II approaches. It notes that FCCs, where a successful CAT II approach is completed, must occur every 35 days to maintain approval for CAT II operations. Requirements for runways, weather, and aircraft parameters for a successful FCC are outlined. Pilots must report the results of FCCs and make the appropriate logbook entries.

EMB AOM Volume 1 APPROACH-LANDING-GO AROUND 9

DRAFT Approach Procedures

to VAPP/CLB.

1.4.7 Precision Approaches – Radio Altimeter. The Radio Altimeter

decision height will be set to applicable approach minimums. This will generate a
“MINIMUMS” call from the EGPWS at or above DA for situational awareness
only. DA is based solely on the barometric altimeter.
CAT I ILS Approach Example:
• Published DA (H) = 767 ft. (200 ft.)
• Radio Altimeter DH = 200 ft.
CAT II ILS Approach Example:
• Published CAT II RA = 102 ft., round up to nearest 5ft.
• Radio Altimeter Setting = 105 ft
Flight Confidence Checks.
The FAA Approved All Weather Operations (AWO) which allows CAT II operations
requires that a successful approach be accomplished and reported at least once every
35 days. This validating approach is referred to as a “Flight Confidence Check (FCC).”
Ground checks alone are not sufficient to maintain AWO status.
All CAT II approaches must be reported to dispatch and the MOCC and written in the
maintenance logbook accordingly. Beginning 25 days from the last reported CAT II
approach, MOCC via OCC will add MEL 34-52 to the flight release indicating a CAT II
approach is required. If no CAT II approach is reported at 35 days since the last
reported CAT II approach, MEL 34-51 will be recorded in the Maintenance Logbook
with the following notation – “Restricted to CAT I Weather Minima Awaiting Flight Con-
fidence Check.” This downgrades the weather minima.

FCC Requirements.
— Aircraft
• No MEL 34-51 placard.
— Runway
• CAT I or II
• FCC is prohibited with chart NOTE, or NOTAM, indicating localizer is
unusable inside the threshold of that runway.
• Runway length less than 7000 feet not recommended.
• Runway not contaminated with snow, slush, or ice.
— Weather
• Prior to 35 day limit - weather down to CAT II approach minimums must
be conducted on CAT II runway.
• After 35 day limit (MEL 34-51): CAT I or better, minimum 1000/3
recommended.
• Gusty winds - gust factor > 10 knots not recommended (identified on
ATIS or tower report).
• Daytime recommended. All other limitations and operational require-
ments for accomplishing a CAT II must be observed.
Flightcrews must be aware that the ILS critical area may not be protected with weather
greater than 800-2.
Flightcrews should advise ATC that a practice CAT II approach is being conducted
and request that the protected area be guarded. ATC may not be able to accommo-
date this request in which case the flightcrew should be aware of the potential for local-

izer beam and / or glideslope disruption. If localizer or glideslope deflection results in
aircraft tracking problems, disconnect the autopilot and continue to a visual landing. If
able to determine that an unsuccessful FCC is due to ILS interference caused by air-
craft or equipment operating within the ILS critical area then no maintenance logbook
entry should be made.
Parameters required for a successful FCC.
— Airspeed +10/-5 knots from Approach Speed.
— Course <3/4 deflection.
— Glide Path <1/2 dot.
Required Reporting.
If FCC is successful:
• Contact OCC and complete Maintenance Logbook entry with MOCC.
• Maintenance Logbook entry - “Successful Flight Confidence Check
completed”. Airport, Runway, CAT II or WX.
IF FCC is unsuccessful:
• Contact OCC and complete Maintenance Logbook Entry with MOCC.
• Maintenance Logbook entry - Detailed description of how the approach failed
the FCC.
