a. In India, one of the major issues is HOMELESSNESS. Homeless are as those who do not live in a
regular residence due to lack of adequate & affordable housing, safety, and availability.
b. The major cause of homelessness is families migrating from rural to urban cities and urbanization.
c. But due to lack of resources, unemployment and affordable housing, these people are being forced
to live in deplorable slum like conditions.
d. According to 2011 census, there were 28% homeless people from rural areas and 20% homeless
people living in the cities as compared to 2001. Today, India has a deficit of 25 million houses in its
urban centres. Nearly one-third of urban India lives in slums.
e. The day to day facing challenges and characteristics of slums are mostly lack
reliable sanitation services, supply of clean water, reliable electricity and natural calamities like flood,
poor planning, shanty houses and other basic services.
2. Architectural Aims
Translate your goals and objective into a set of architectural aims / concepts
a. The aim of the project is providing a safe and secure sustainable, affordable housing for the people
who are below the poverty line and also it doesn't brand itself as housing for the poor but an asset
which is useful for everyone.
b. A house serves a variety of functions, but not all of them require built up shelters, just being in a
space that is yours.
c. In Indian houses, a majority of activities depend on the presence of open spaces like verandas,
terrace, courtyards that can adapt to the functions and need of each individual. Reducing the built up
space reduces construction cost.
d. Increasing economic opportunity - By maximising shared spaces (open spaces) creates an
opportunity for public activity, co working (self-employment) social interaction and a cohesive society.
e. A design solution which sustains not just the weather conditions but is easy to maintain, sustain
natural calamities like flood and can be replicated to bring a scalable change.
3. Critical evaluation of Issues in the design thesis proposal ( one or more of the following issues
may be addressed in your design thesis proposal depending on the context of the design)
3.1 Human Issues 3.2 Social / Economic Issues
- concern for people - social interaction spaces
- sense of safe, secure and affordable - relationship to social environment
- feel of the place - social image of slum people should be change
- adequacy of space will be less built-up space from shanty houses to pleasing environment &
with more open space to increase the economic lifsyle.
opportunity and affordability - social-economic costs – affordable for the people
- housing community promotes social interaction in low income group(earn rs.3,00,000 to 6,00,000
and enhance people life style. per annum)
Sustainable design- The building seeks to reduce - Modern/hi technology & Choice of materials,

lays an opportunity for the expanding 3d

Instead of melting new plastic to create

conscious ways of dealing with the
looming demand for raw plastics.
High density polyethylene plastics which

work in the printers making some
beneficial things.
By using this technology, structure can be
built easily within a fraction of time and
events of any size. Convenient for
modular designs.
- Structural design is designing a separate module
for single family using 3d printing technology and
put together to form a community.
