The dependent variable is the variable that is observed or measured and influenced by the independent variable. It is also known as the response, output, or criterion variable. The independent variable is the variable that is manipulated, such as by the researcher, nature, or circumstances. Both the dependent and independent variables are examined in experiments using the scientific method and are analogous to the effect and cause in a cause-effect relationship, respectively.
