To multiply monomials and
polynomials, you will use
some of the laws of
exponents that you learned
earlier in this chapter.
Multiplying Monomials

The Distributive Property
Look at the following expression:

3(x + 7)
This expression is the sum of x and 7
multiplied by 3.
Multiplying Polynomials By Monomials
Use the distributive property.
1) Simplify: 5(7n – 2)
=(5 • 7n) – (5• 2)
=35n – 10
2) Simplify: 2
6rs(r s - 3)
=(6rs • 2
r s)– (6rs • 3)

=6r s 2 – 18rs
3)Simplify:

F.O.I.L. Method
There is an acronym to help us
remember how to multiply
two binomials.
(2x + -3)(4x + 5)
F : Multiply the First term in each binomial.
O : Multiply the Outer terms in the binomials.
I : Multiply the Inner terms in the binomials.
L : Multiply the Last term in each binomial.
Use the FOIL method to multiply
these binomials:
1) (3a + 4)(2a + 1)
2) (x + 4)(x - 5)
3) (x + 5)(x - 5)
4) (c - 3)(2c - 5)
5) (2w + 3)(2w - 3)
Multiplying polynomials.
5. (a – 3)(a2 – 8a + 5)
3
a– 2
8a + 5a – 2
3a + 24a – 15
a3 – 11a2 + 29a – 15
