Semi Detailed Lesson Plan

This lesson plan teaches students about LAN cabling, specifically straight-through and crossover cables. It outlines objectives, materials, procedures, and an assignment. The procedures include defining terms, discussing the LAN cabling process and the differences between straight-through and crossover cables. Students will then create both types of cables and be evaluated based on proper crimping and functionality. The goal is for students to understand how LAN cables are used to interconnect computers and value their importance in networking.

cabling
III. Procedure
A. Preparation:
1. Daily Routine
 Opening Prayer
 Greetings
 Classroom Management
 Checking of Attendance

B. Presentation:
1. Motivation
Show pictures of trending computer games that uses LAN Connection, ask
someone inside the class if they want to know how it works. Use picture equation
to reveal the lesson for the day.
2. Raised Up Question
Ask 3 students on what they want to know or to learn about the topic that will be
answered after the discussion.

3. Definition of Terms
Straight Through Cable – used in Local Area Network (LAN) to connect PC to a
network hub or router.
Crossover Cable – used in Local Area Network (LAN) to connect network devices
directly, without the need for a router in the middle.
RJ45 – an eight-wire connector used to connect computer to category 5
unshielded twisted pair cables in a network.
UTP - Means Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP) the most common cable used in
computer networking.
Wire Stripper - used to remove the outer jacket of the wire.
Crimping Tool - used to crimp UTP Cables to RJ45 connector.
Cable Tester – assists in the installation and control of networks.

4. Lesson Proper (Discussion method using powerpoint presentation.)

4.1 LAN Cabling process of creating cable used to create a network that
interconnects computers.

4.2 T568B Straight-Through Connection - A straight through cable is a type of

twisted pair cable that is used in local area networks to connect a computer to
a network hub such as a router. This type of cable is also sometimes called a
patch cable and is an alternative to wireless connections where one or more
computers access a router through a wireless signal. On a straight through
cable, the wired pins match. Straight through cable use one wiring standard:
both ends use T568A wiring standard or both ends use T568B wiring standard.
The following figure shows a straight through cable of which both ends are
wired as the T568B standard.

4.3 Crossover Ethernet Cable - A crossover Ethernet cable is a type

of Ethernet cable used to connect computing devices together directly. Unlike
straight through cable, the RJ45 crossover cable uses two different wiring
standards: one end uses the T568A wiring standard, and the other end uses
the T568B wiring standard. The internal wiring of Ethernet crossover cables
reverses the transmit and receive signals. It is most often used to connect two
devices of the same type: e.g. two computers (via network interface controller)
or two switches to each other.

4.4 Safety Precautions

 Avoid Horse Playing
 Use proper tool
 Always be on task
 Be Vigilant

4.5 Steps in LAN Cabling

4.5.1 Prepare all the materials needed
4.5.2 Using a crimping tool, trim the end of the UTP Cable, be sure to cut
it equally, to ensure that the ends of the wire are even.
4.5.3 Strip off approximately 1 inch of the UTP cable’s jacket, using
modular crimping tool or cable stripper. Be careful not to damage the
copper wire that is inside the UTP cable.
4.5.4 Separate the 4 twisted wire pairs from each other, and then unwind
each pair, so that you end up with 8 individual wires. Flatten the wires out
as much as possible, since they will need to be very straight for proper
insertion into RJ45 connectors later.
4.5.5 Moving from left to right, arrange the wires in flat, side-by-side.
Arrange the wires based on the T568B formation in both end of the UTP
cable for Straight-through. And for crossover use the T568A in one side
and T568B for the other side. The color order is important so do this
correctly.
4.5.6 Use the cutter which is in the crimping tool to make a straight cut
across the wires ½ inch from the cut sleeve to the end of the wires.
4.5.7 Hold the RJ45 connector so that its pins are facing away from you
and the plug-clip side is facing down, carefully insert the wires in the RJ45.
4.5.8 Take a look from the top part of RJ45. Make sure the wires are all
the way in and reach the end of the RJ45.
4.5.9 Insert the assembled UTP cable and RJ45 into the crimping tool
RJ45 slot. Firmly squeeze the handle of crimping tool until all the UTP cable
wires pierced into the pins of RJ45. Release the handle and repeat this to
ensure all the wires are properly crimped.
4.5.10 After completing the fabrication on the first end of the cable, repeat
all steps on the opposite end.
4.5.11 Test the cable using the Cable Tester.

5. Application
Direction: Students will create both Straight-Through and Crossover LAN
Cables by following the steps for 20 minutes.

6. Generalization
LAN Cabling is the process of creating LAN Cable which is used in
interconnecting computer. There are two types of LAN Cable the straight-
through and crossover. The straight-through mainly used in connecting
many computers with the use of HUB or routers. While the crossover cable
use in connecting devices directly without using HUB or routers. There are
several tools and materials used in LAN Cabling like UTP Cable, wire
stripper, crimping tool, RJ45 and cable tester.

7. Evaluation
 Proper Crimping – 30%
 Functionality – 70%
 Total of 100%

IV. Assignment
1. What are the Structured Cabling Systems?
2. 2. Identify and describe the elements that are recommended for structured cabling networks.
