Ugpa3173 Unit Operation Ii January Trimester 2018 Tutorial I

(1) The document provides information on the screen analysis of crushed limestone samples and asks the reader to calculate specific surface area, number of particles, volume-surface mean diameter, and particle fraction by number. (2) It also provides the mass distribution of crushed coal from a crusher and asks the reader to calculate volume mean diameter, particle distribution by number, total volume, and total surface area. (3) Finally, it gives information on a particle mixture containing cubes and spheres and asks for equivalent sphere diameters based on volume, surface, and surface-volume ratio.

UGPA3173 UNIT OPERATION II

January Trimester 2018

Tutorial I

1) Table 1 shows the screen analysis of mass samples of crushed limestone. The density of
the particles is 1680 kg/m3, the shape factor a = 0.6 and Φs = 0.78. (Past yr 2014)

Table 1: Screen analysis of crushed limestone

Mesh Screen Mass fraction
opening, mm retained
4 1.31 0.000
8 1.19 0.153
12 1.07 0.197
16 0.95 0.294
20 0.83 0.159
24 0.71 0.124
28 0.59 0.073

For the limestone particles between 4-mesh and 28-mesh in particle size, determine the:

(i) The specific surface area, Aw (mm2/g). (5 marks)

(ii) The number of particles in the sample, Nw (particles/g) (3 marks)
(iii) The volume-surface mean diameter, DS . (3 marks)
(iv) The fraction of particles (by number) in the 8/12 mesh. (3 marks)

2) A crusher reduces coal from coarse particles to finer particles with the following mass
distribution as in Table 2. Given the shape factor is 0.5, sphericity is 1 and density of
particle is 2700 kg/m3. Calculate:

Table 2: Mass distribution of crushed coal

Surface area of mesh

opening (mm )
1000 10
562.5 15
250 35
62.5 20
2.5 10

(i) Volume mean diameter

(ii) The distribution based on number of particles (in fraction).
(iii) Total volume of particles in mixture.
(iv) Total surface of particles in mixture.
3) Mixture of particle containing 24% of cube and 75% of spherical particles with nominal
diameter of 4 mm. Given that the total number of particles in the mixture is 8460. Find the
equivalent sphere diameter based on:
(i) Volume of mixture
(ii) Surface of mixture
(iii) Surface-volume ratio of mixture

4) Figure 1 shows a solid cylindrical particle with height, h = 18 μm covered by two

hemisphere of diameter, d = 7 μm. (Past yr 2014)

Figure 1

Calculate the following diameters for this particle in millimeter (mm):

(i) The volume equivalent sphere diameter (3 marks)

(ii) The surface equivalent sphere diameter (3 marks)
(iii) The surface-volume equivalent diameter (3 marks)
