RECOMMENDED SPECIFICATIONS FOR DRESSING

O-rings Required:
8 ea. 230-90 f/ hold down slips
1 ea. 343-90 f/ hold down receptacle (upper)
1 ea. 240-90 f/ hold down receptacle (lower)
1 ea. 349-90 f/ balance piston
1 ea. 339-90 f/ seal retainer
1 ea. 232-90 f/ acme bottom

ASSEMBLY

The following instructions do not list steps that are obvious to a trained toolhand, such as application of grease or
taking care with seal surfaces. The top end of the mandrel (2) must be filed smooth above the split ring groove
before beginning. The short length below the groove is a seal surface.

1. Assemble balance piston (9), with O-ring installed, into balance piston housing (10), and slide onto mandrel
(2).
2. Install bypass seal (7) and O-ring (6) into seal retainer (5), slide onto mandrel just beyond groove at top end,
then install split ring (3) into groove and screw seal retainer cap (4) onto seal retainer.
3. Screw top (1) onto mandrel and clamp in vise.
4. Install hold down slips (14), with O-rings (18) installed, into holes in side of hold down receptacle (11). Install
hold down springs (15) into counterbores in hold down slips and retain with hold down straps (17) and hold
down screws (16).
5. Screw top gage (13) and upper element gage (20) (LEFT HAND THREAD), onto ends of hold down
receptacle, and install O-rings (12 & 19) inside.

6. Install the following items onto the packing mandrel (24), in order, from the top end: element retainer (25),
end packing element (21), element spacer (23), center packing element (22), and finally, another spacer and
end packing element.
7. Screw element assembly into bottom end of hold down receptacle, then slide this assembly onto lower end of
mandrel and screw into balance piston housing.

CAUTION
Tighten this thread with balance piston housing in vise, not mandrel

8. Assemble drag blocks (36) and drag block springs (37) into control body (32), and retain with drag block
retainer (35). Screw slip housing (28) onto control body (LEFT HAND THREAD).
9. Slide recovery sleeve (34) through bottom of control body part way, install lower slips (29) (with 2 slip springs
(31) screwed to each) into slip housing windows, then push recovery sleeve in to stop.
10. Slide cone (26) into top end of control body & over recovery sleeve, then screw recovery sleeve cap (27)
onto recovery sleeve. Tighten this thread now, with one pin inserted through holes in cone and cap, and
another through holes between slips and in recovery sleeve.
11. Slide sub-assembly from step above over mandrel and screw cone into element retainer. Then screw bottom
sub (39), with O-ring installed, onto bottom end of mandrel.
12. Tighten all threads, being sure to tighten top gage before balance piston housing, and install thread lock set
screws (33 & 40) in slip housing and bottom sub.

DISASSEMBLY

Disassembly is essentially the reverse of assembly. The following steps will break the tool into sub-assemblies.
Note the LEFT HAND THREADS indicated on drawing and assembly instructions.

1. With top (1) in vise, un-J packer and slide bottom sub (39) up as far as possible. Remove thread lock set
screws (40), then, while backing up on top end of mandrel (2), remove bottom sub.
2. Unscrew cone (26) from element retainer (25) and slide slip/drag block sub-assembly off bottom of mandrel
and set aside.
3. With pin through holes in element retainer and packing mandrel (24), unscrew packing mandrel from hold
down receptacle (11). Slide this sub-assembly off mandrel and set aside.
4. Break mandrel out of top, then unscrew seal retainer cap (4) from seal retainer and remove these parts and
split ring (3).
5. With balance piston housing (10) in vise, break off hold down receptacle and slide off mandrel. Slide balance
piston housing off and remove balance piston (9) from inside.
