Application of Calculus: Abd Rahim Bin Yahya & Mohamad Haniz Bin Radzi (4mted - 1)

Calculus is a branch of mathematics concerned with finding derivatives and integrals of functions. It has two major branches: differential calculus and integral calculus. Calculus has widespread applications in science, economics, engineering, and other fields wherever problems can be modeled mathematically. It allows analyzing rates of change and determining maximal values like profit. Calculus is used in economics to analyze production and business activities. It is also used in engineering to model and solve problems, and in medicine to discover optimal conditions and model treatments. Physics also relies on calculus in areas like mechanics and electromagnetism. Overall, calculus is a fundamental tool in mathematics and modern science.

APPLICATION OF CALCULUS

From the Oxford English Dictionary, calculus can be defined as the branch of
mathematics concerned with finding derivatives and integrals of functions by methods
based on the summation of infinitesimal differences. A word of calculus comes from
Latin and it mean as a small stone used for counting. However, in a sample word, we
can say that calculus is a branch in mathematics focused on limits, functions,
derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. This subject constitutes a major part of modern
mathematics education. It has two major branches, differential calculus and integral
calculus, which are related by the fundamental theorem of calculus. Calculus is the
study of change, in the same way that geometry is the study of shape and algebra is the
study of operations and their application to solving equations. A course in calculus is a
gateway to other, more advanced courses in mathematics devoted to the study of
functions and limits, broadly called mathematical analysis. Calculus has widespread
applications in science, economics, and engineering and can solve many problems for
which algebra alone is insufficient. Calculus is used in every branch of the physical
sciences, actuarial science, computer science, statistics, engineering, economics,
business, medicine, demography, and in other fields wherever a problem can be
mathematically modeled and an optimal solution is desired. It allows one to go from
(non-constant) rates of change to the total change or vice versa, and many times in
studying a problem we know one and are trying to find the other.

One of the applications of calculus is in economics field. Economics is the social

science that is concerned with the production, distribution, and consumption of goods
and services. Calculus allows for the determination of maximal profit by providing a way
to easily calculate both marginal cost and revenue. It is so useful especially for
businessmen when they want to know about profit and others. In economics also, they
had used calculus to analysis the economy as a great system. It also a same situation
in microeconomics where production is the conversion of inputs into outputs. It is an
economic process that uses inputs to create a commodity for exchange or direct use.

Production is a flow and thus a rate of output per period of time. Distinctions include
such production alternatives as for consumption like food, haircuts and others.
Investment goods like new tractors, buildings, roads and others. The public goods like
national defense, small-pox vaccinations and others. Or private goods like new
computers, bananas, and also "guns" vs. "butter".

Besides, businesses also are predominant in capitalist economies. Most

businesses are privately owned. A business is typically formed to earn profit that will
increase the wealth of its owners and grow the business itself. The owners and
operators of a business have as one of their main objectives the receipt or generation of
a financial returns in exchange for work and acceptance of risk. Notable exceptions
include cooperative enterprises and state-owned enterprises. Businesses can also be
formed not-for-profit or be state-owned. Most of their activities were used calculus to
solve their problems. Without application of calculus they cannot identify about the size
and scope of the business, and its anticipated management and ownership. It also
difficult to businesses to know about the sector and country, limited liability, tax
advantages, disclosure and compliance requirements. So, application of calculus in this
field will make their work more easily, professionally, competently, influentially and
efficiently.

In addition, engineers also had applied mathematics especially calculus to find

suitable solutions to problems or to make improvements to the status quo. More than
ever, engineers are now required to have knowledge of relevant mathematics and
sciences for their design projects; as a result, they keep on learning new material
throughout their career. Engineers use their knowledge of science, mathematics, and
appropriate experience to find suitable solutions to a problem. Engineering is
considered a branch of applied mathematics and science. Creating an appropriate
mathematical model of a problem allows them to analyze it (sometimes definitively), and
to test potential solutions.

In the actual of medicine, calculus can be used to discover the optimal branching
angle of a blood vessel so as to maximize flow. From the decay laws for a particular
drug's elimination from the body, it's used to get dosing laws. In nuclear medicine, it's

used to build models of radiation transport in targeted tumor therapies. Most of
discovery in this field need them to know about calculus. So that, they can achieve and
search more about medicine and it surely will be great and good for them so.

The others of application of calculus most in Physics especially in classical

mechanics and electromagnetism are interrelated through calculus. The mass of an
object of known density, the moment of inertia of objects, as well as the total energy of
an object within a conservative field can be found by the use of calculus. An example of
the use of calculus in mechanics is Newton's second law of motion: historically stated it
expressly uses the term "rate of change" which refers to the derivative saying the rate of
change of momentum of a body is equal to the resultant force acting on the body and is
in the same direction. Commonly expressed today as Force = Mass × acceleration, it
involves differential calculus because acceleration is the time derivative of velocity or
second time derivative of trajectory or spatial position. Starting from knowing how an
object is accelerating, we use calculus to derive its path.

As a whole view, we can say that calculus is one of the greatest inventions of
modern science. There is just so much it can offer. The success of calculus has been
extended over time into various other important topics in mathematics. Some are:
differential equations, vector calculus, calculus of variations, complex analysis and
differential topology. Studying calculus gives us the fundamentals that we will need in all
of our future studies. So, it is so important for us to know and concur as far as we can in
this essential topics because it so useful for us in our daily activities.
