Di Na Tayo Umiibig Tulad Noon by Virgilio Almario

The poem "Di na Tayo Umiibig Tulad Noon" by Virgilio Almario discusses how love has changed from the past to the present. It explores how love in the past was more genuine, pure and authentic compared to today where love seems shallow and rushed. The poem laments that people no longer love in the old fashioned way and have lost the true essence of love. It suggests modern society has become less caring about love and relationships, reflecting our declining care for nature and each other.

‘Di na Tayo Umiibig Tulad Noon by Virgilio Almario

Virgilio Senadrin Almario, better known by his pen name Rio Alma, is a Filipino artist,
poet, critic, translator, editor, teacher, and cultural manager. His works are well-known locally and
internationally. The ‘Di na Tayo Umibig Tulad Noon is one of his works, it tells us how love
before is different to the love that is present in most people nowadays. It is about someone who
has loved before and long to be loved in an old fashion manner. The love we have now is no longer
genuine.

It is about a person who perceive and compares how love is different from the past and
present. It tells us that love in the present is just shallow and too rushed, love that is not pure and
real, love that is forced and controlled. They do not love like the way people love in the past and
lost the true essence of love. He is also trying to say that the ideals of love and the ways people
loved has now become mundane and different from how people have loved and valued their loved
ones in the past, reflective to our lack of care for our nature and environment, our hearts has
become polluted and corrupt as well. The poem is romanticism because it focuses on love, and that
everything changes as time progresses. Even how people love each other change. The sense of the
poem is about expressing love, it is not about papers or love letters it’s about how you make them
feel in love. It shows us how much things have changed during the past few years and how much
the ideals of being in love with someone and our views of its values and importance have greatly
decreased.

The poem showed us how much things have changed, that love in this generation isn’t
really giving importance to love. We have related to it because, sometimes we wish for that old
school love again wherein affection was greatly valued and love was authentic and real. Every
year changes, the definition of love changes. According to Mohandas K. Gandhi, "Love never
claims, it ever gives. Love ever suffers, never resents never revenges itself.". Love, it’s a magical
word to be felt. The best love is the kind that awakens the soul; that makes us reach for more, that
plants the fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds.
