Comment On The Thesis of Esan Folake Olabisi: Effectiveness of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy in Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

This thesis examines the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). It provides background on OCD, defining it and outlining its etiology, clinical features, and treatment options. The thesis then focuses on CBT, describing exposure response therapy and cognitive therapy. It analyzes the results of several studies demonstrating the behavioural and neurobiological changes produced by CBT, as well as its duration and effectiveness. It compares the efficacy of exposure/response prevention and cognitive therapy, finding them similarly effective. The thesis concludes that CBT is an effective treatment for OCD.

Comment on the thesis of ESAN FOLAKE OLABISI: EFFECTIVENESS OF

COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY IN TREATMENT OF OBSESSIVE

COMPULSIVE DISORDER

This literature review is about the Effectiveness of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

(CBT) in treatment of Obsessive Compulsive disorder (OCD). The thesis works out on 33
pages, containing 2 figures and 3 table, citing 49 references.
In the „Introduction” the Author reviews the importance of OCD and the method of
this work.
In the next chapter (Background) the Author delineates the definition, etiology, clinical
features, classification, differential diagnosis and the treatment possibilities of OCD,
mentioning pharmaco-, psycho- and combination therapeutic possibilities and ineffective
therapies. In the third chapter (CBT) the Author introduces the Exposure Response Therapy
(ERP) and the basis of Cognitive Therapy.
In the Results and Discussion chapter the Author introduces the behavioural therapies.
The next sub-chapter is about the neurobiological changes in OCD and the effect of CBT. The
author shows it through three very impressive studyies. Then she writes about the Duration
and effectiveness of CBT. The cChapter 4.3 the author compares the effectiveness of EX/RP
and CT in the treatment of OCD, and mentions some studies, confirming the similar
effectiveness, and possibilities to combine the two methods. The cChapter 4.4 is about the
Efficacy of different components of EX/RP, and in chapter 4.5 she writes about the relapses.
The last part is the conclusion.

Remarks:
The choice of subject is good and the theme is important. The OCD is one of the most
excruciating and therapy resistant psychiatric disorder.
The manuscript is well-written, without grammatical errors. Some of the references
could be more concrete (3, 4, 10)
It would have been nice to mention EMDR among the (possible) effective therapeutic
methods eg EMDR (Marr, J. (2012). EMDR Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder:
Preliminary Research. Journal of EMDR Practice and Research, 6(1), 2–15. ¸ Marsden, Z.
(2018) A randomizsed controlled trial comparing EMDR and CBT for Obsessive-Compulsive
Disorder Clinical Psychology & Psychotherapy 25(1):e10–e18, Ponniah, K. (2013) An update
on the efficacy of psychological therapies in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder
in adults J Obsessive Compuls Relat Disord. 2013 Apr 1; 2(2): 207–218. ), DBS.

Question:
Can you introduce some other therapeutic possibilities of OCD, than what you have
already mentioned in your thesis?

An excellent (5) mark is proposed.

The earlier survey revealed that psychological distress was significantly greater in a
sample of Hungarian medical students than the same age group of the general population. The
present paper summarizes a result on mental health among medical students of the English
program at the beginning of their first and second years. An anonymous self-administered
questionnaire containing standardized scales was used to for collecting data (demographic,
stress measuring, psychopathological symptoms, depression and anxiety, social support and
perceived health using validated scales). The questionnaires were fulfilled at the beginning of
the first semester of the first year and were repeated at the beginning of the first semester of
the second year.
The thesis works out the topic on 24 pages containing 5 tables citing 23 references.
In the „Introduction” the Author reviews the literature dealing with the importance of
mental health, the mental health of medical students and the mental health of students
studying abroad. She draws the aim of research.
In the chapter of „Methods” the Author delineates correctly the different scales used in
the study. Excel and Stata 9.0 statistical programs wasere used as a statistical method.
The Results are summarized in 5 tables than the data were interpreted.
“Strengths’ and weaknesses of the study” is a very noticeable part of the thesis. Here
the Author expounds why these examination periods were used. On this is the other hand She
knows about the problem of anonymity and data protection. She pinpoints that a cohort study
was possible in this manner.
The Conclusion was that „medical students are exposed to significant psychological
due to a weaker social support structure.” Distress was no different from the two periods
among those who had been or had not been under psychiatric treatment before. On the other
hhand psychological stress increased among English language medical students from their
first year to the second.
The Author gives some suggestions on how the international medical schools can
take steps to implement strategies which identify students at risk, and helps everyone to
anticipate and better coope with a situation. The final conclusion was that a strong sense of
coherence and stable social support increase psychological resilience.

Remarks:
-The manuscript is well- written. There are some grammatical errors but they don’t
disturb the lucidity.
- Page 6, 7, 8: some references are defective („hiba! A könyvjelző nem létezik”) …
- Page 11. Line 1. „Many (?) have.
- Page.12. Line 2.: Who(m) the student. .
- Page. 17. Line 4.: international
Statistical analysis is correct.
Conclusions are moderate. I have no questions.

An excellent (5) mark is proposed.
