Screencast Math Lesson Transcript
Hello everyone, my name is Ms. Salter and today I will be teaching you a Mathematics Grade 1
lesson. As you can see, there are two boxes on the page. On the left, we have the common core
math standards for patterns, which focuses on operations and algebraic thinking, and looks at
understanding simple patterns. On the right hand side, we see the Ontario Curriculum
Expectations, which looks at patterns and relationships. So the overall lesson objective is for
students to understand simple patterns and be able to extend these simple patterns based on the
information they have been given.
Mathematics – Let’s Practice Patterns! Create an ABA pattern on the table below by dragging
either Thing 1 or Thing 2 into each cellblock. So the cell block refers to this table below. We can
see there is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (use mouse to count orally while passing each cell block) cell blocks in
total. As you can see, there is Thing 1 already placed into the first cellblock. So if Thing 1 is
starting the pattern, will this be considered A or B in the pattern? (pause for student processing
time) Good – this will be considered A in the ABA pattern. To make things a little easier, we are
going to put an A beside Thing One. If Thing 1 is A, can anyone guess what Thing 2 will be?
Good – Thing 2 will be B in this pattern. Now we are going to go one-step further and write the
pattern below the cellblocks. If we are starting with Thing 1, we are going to start with A below.
If we are starting with A and creating an ABA pattern, the next will be _______ (pause for
student processing time), good – B, so the next part of our pattern will be B or Thing 2. Then we
go back to A again because it is an ABA pattern. The next one will be back to B, and then we go
back to A again. We can see the ABA pattern below is A, B, A, B, A (drag the mouse along
while going through the letters in the pattern). Now we are going to drag the characters, either
Thing 1 or Thing 2 to the appropriate boxes below. So we started with Thing 1 which is A, then
we are going to go to Thing 2 which is B. We are going to click on the image, then drag it until it
is highlight in blue in the cellblock. Once we have done that, we are going to go back to Thing 1
which is A and we have started our pattern – ABA. We have Thing 1, which is A, so we continue
this pattern by dragging Thing 2 or B, then go back to Thing 1 again for A. As you can see – we
go A, B, A, B, A or Thing 1, Thing 2, Thing 1, Thing 2, Thing 1 and that is our simple ABA
pattern.
On the next page is the accountability worksheet. Therefore, what I would like you to do –
possibly with the help of a parent, is click on this little paper clip below. As you can see, it opens
a Word Document that I would like you to print off at home. If you feel confident enough, you
can do this homework at home, but if you are having a little bit of difficulty, you are welcome to
bring it into class and we can work on it together. This is very similar to what we practiced today
– you are creating more patterns and we are focusing on the ABA patterns in particular. This first
question is nicely labelled for us with A and B, while below you can see we go from A to B to A
to B to A. For the second pattern you can see there are two objects as well, but this time they’re
not labelled and below isn’t labelled either. You will have to show me how to make an ABA
pattern using the triangle and the oval. The third question, the pattern is already made for you, so
you need to determine whether you are going to use the red rectangle or the purple triangle to
complete the pattern. You will circle, and can even draw into the space, which one it will be.
You are more than welcome to use either crayons or pencil crayons to colour in your objects as
well using the same colours as in the question. For the final, challenge question, you are going to
create a pattern that is going to be a little more difficult because we have not yet looked at it.
This time we are creating an AABB pattern, so you can see below we have started with A, A, B,
but you will need to fill in how you think this pattern will end. I know this one is a little bit more
challenging, but I know that you can do it! I would like you to print this out, do what you can,
and everything else can be reviewed in class.
Let’s go through what we learned today – we focused on the ABA pattern. As you can see,
sometimes it helps to write the letters below the pattern, and you are rotating from one object, to
the other object. That’s what we learned today for mathematics and I am looking forward to
seeing you again tomorrow!
