The Concept of Self-Harm

Self-harm, also known as self-injury, describes behaviors where a person intentionally hurts their body's tissues, such as cutting, scratching, or burning themselves, as a way to deal with negative or painful thoughts and feelings. It is not considered a mental disorder but is related to conditions like depression and anxiety. The cycle of self-harm involves suffering from emotions, becoming overwhelmed by emotions, panicking, self-harming for temporary relief, feeling shame and grief, and then repeating the cycle. While self-harm often leaves physical marks, people who engage in it typically try to hide the behavior rather than seek help.

THE CONCEPT OF SELF-HARM

Each of us used to undergo the same difficult emotions but the influence level of those emotions
is different from each person. Many people choose to share that difficulty while the others are still
stuck in their thoughts and turn to self-harm as a liberation.

Self-harm also called with a common name other than self-injury, describes the behaviors that a
person intentionally hurt the body's tissues like cutting hands, scratching or burning skin and even
pulling out hair but there is no intention of suicide as the way to resist negative or painful thoughts
and feelings. Self-harm is not a mental disorder, but it is related to depression, anxiety disorder,
and most people usually misunderstood it with the neuropathy. Basically, any action that hurt
yourself to deal with emotions is considered self-harm

The cycle of emotion: Emotion suffering- Emotion overload- Panic- Self harm- Temporary relief-
Shame grief. People with self-harm syndrome usually take the false belief that physical pain can
help them relieve stress, worry or get rids of their mental pain. Sometimes, it might be the way
them to punish themselves for the things they've done, it can also make them feel they're able to
control everything in their lives. But in fact, it is only temporary reassurance, they need more and
more physical pain to inflict numbs the emotional pain. Soon after the pain passes through, feelings
of guilt and shame might follow will continue reduplicate the cycle of mood.

Self-harm has a lot of different warning signs but many of them are often overlooked and
disregarded, self-harm does not always have the typical signs such as cuts on the wrist but it is also
expressed through many other actions. If a person often has unexplained injuries such as cuts or
burns in some places that is difficult to crash, when asked, the answer seem to be normal, maybe
they are using a lie to hide the suffering in their mind. Moreover, if the person always wears long
clothing even in the hot season just to cover his body without pursuing any fashion style. Most
likely they are trying to hide the wounds that make them feel inferiority and embarrassed. For self-
harm people they tend to hide their traces one way or another instead of seeking physical and
mental help. According to them, hiding the pain is easier than seeking help. On the other hand,
self-harm people who are often in a state of negative psychology, always show disappointment,
disgust for themselves, difficult to adjust their emotions, easily get offended, or abruptly change
their attitudes, reduce interaction with family and friends.

It is not surprising that the majority of respondents about self-harm all have wrong thoughts about
it, whereas the fact is completely different. One of the most popular prejudices about
self-harm is "draw attention" while most of them try to hide the signs of self-harm and don't talk
to anyone about their pressures. Another myth about that is not only girl self-harm, it happens to
everyone at any age but mostly with teenagers aged 11-28 years old. Besides, Self-harm does not
mean suicide, in nature, self-harm people only use extreme methods to relieve their psychology
but do not really want to commit suicide, they themselves do not like their behavior even hate and
doesn't enjoy it like many people think
Self-harm syndrome is gradually gaining popularity and affecting more than we think especially
for young people.
