Assay of Magnesium Sulfate

This document provides a procedure for assaying a sample of magnesium sulfate. Magnesium sulfate is titrated with EDTA using a pH 10 buffer and solochrome black T indicator. The EDTA forms a complex with the magnesium ions, causing the indicator to change color from wine red to blue at the endpoint of the titration. The standardization of the EDTA solution and the steps of the magnesium sulfate assay involve titrating solutions of calcium chloride and the magnesium sulfate sample, respectively, with EDTA and monitoring the color change of the indicator.

ASSAY OF MAGNESIUM SULFATE

AIM: to perform assay of a given sample og magnesium sulfate

Principal: magnesium sulfate is an example of saline cathartic. It is assayed by titration with 0.05M
EDTA using pH 10 buffer and solochrome black T indicator. EDTA forms Magnesium EDTA complex.
The colour change of the indicator is from wine red to blue at the end point.

Materials

 EDTA 0.05M
 Ph 10 Buffer
 0.05M CaCl2
 Solochrome black T Indicato(sBT)
 Magnesium sulfate

Stardadization of EDTA
PROCEDURE
1. Pipette 10ml of 0.05m cacl2 solution in a conical flask and 5ml of pH 10 buffer solution.
2. Add 2-3 drops of DBT indicator and titrate against EDTA.
3. Repeat the titration for concordant values.

ASSAY
1. Weigh accurately 0.1g of mgSo4 and dissolve in 50ml of water.
2. Add 10ml of pH buffer 10 solution and 3-4 drops of SBT indicator.
3. Titrate the content against EDTA.
4. Repeat the titration for concordant values.
