Buckling Analysis: I. Definition and Purpose

This document summarizes the results of a buckling analysis performed on a structure. Buckling analysis is used to predict the critical load at which global buckling failure may occur. Two cases were considered: without P-delta effect and with P-delta effect. In case 1 without P-delta, the minimum buckling factor was 3.121, meaning buckling would occur at a load of 3.121 dead load + 3.121 live load. In case 2 with P-delta, the minimum buckling factor was lower at 2.381, indicating buckling could occur at a lower load of 2.381 dead load + 2.381 live load when P-delta is included.

Buckling Analysis
I. Definition and Purpose

The buckling analysis is used to predict the critical load at which buckling failure can
occur.

The global buckling factor is the factor with which the loads in a load combination
should be multiplied to obtain global buckling in the structure.

Critical load for global buckling = buckling factor αcr * current loads

These values are relevant:

 αcr<1: the current loading is more than the critical loading, and therefore the
structure will fail (collapse) as a whole with the current loads.
 αcr >1: the current loading is less than the critical loading, and therefore the
structure will NOT fail (collapse) as a whole with the current loads.

*However,

II. Method and Result

Two cases of the analysis will be considered in this report.

1. Without P-delta effect

2. With P-delta effect.

Etabs 2016 software will be employed to analysis and generate the results of this
buckling analysis.

Case 1: Without P-delta

No P-delta is considered

Result of buckling factor:

Minimum buckling factor

The least buckling factor which cause the global buckling failure is αcr =3.121
This means that this load combination: 3.121 DL+ 3.121LL is called critical load. When
this critical load is applied to the structure, the whole structure will collapse due to
buckling.

Case 2: With P-delta

Use load factor of 1DL+0.25LL

for P-delta

Result of buckling factor:

Minimum buckling factor

The least buckling factor which cause the global buckling failure is αcr =2.381
This means that this load combination: 2.381DL+ 2.381LL is called critical load.
When this critical load is applied to the structure, the whole structure will collapse
due to buckling.

P-delta load + BF*Applied load= Buckling load

(DL+0.25LL) + 2.381(DL+LL) = Buckling load
