Project Title: Recumbent Smart Wheelchair Using Ir Sensors For Obstacle Detection and Risk Avoidance
AIM :
The main aim of this project is to design and develop a system that allows the user to
interact with the smart wheelchair at different levels of control for obstacle detection and
collision avoidance providing efficient risk management.
OBJECTIVES:
This project introduces a new design model of wheel chair for physically disabled which
can be used for moving from one place to another.
The project provides a helping tool to the disabled and helps them move around,
additionally the smart wheelchair can be converted into a bed. This allows the user to
independently lead a normal life leaving behind their disability.
The wheelchair provides safety by adopting features such as obstacle detection for
collision avoidance and hollow detection to avoid danger which they might encounter in
their day to day life such as stairs, potholes, etc.
This wheelchair enables the user to make smart decisions.
METHODOLOGY:
The major component used in this smart wheelchair design is the IR sensors. IR sensor is
an electronic instrument which is used to sense certain characteristics of its surroundings by either
emitting or detecting infrared radiations. Here we use 3 pairs of IR sensors for this purpose.
The first two pair of sensors are located at the lower front end on either side of the
wheelchair for obstacle detection (wall) or hollow detection (staircase). There are two more pairs
of sensors located at the front end of the arm rest for extended applications such as moving closer
to a structure such as table. The last pair of sensors is located at the rear end of the wheelchair to
provide detection and sensing when the wheelchair moves in the reverse direction.
Three stepper motors, which divide a full rotation into number of equal steps are used.
Based on the input given to the driver, the stepper motor helps in the movement of the wheel
chair in the particular direction. First one is used for the movement of the wheelchair and the next
two are used to transform the smart wheelchair into a bed.
Working Of Wheelchair:
The smart wheelchair can be transformed into a bed by pressing the SM (Sleep mode)
key and the angle of inclination of the backrest can be adjusted by pressing the A (Angle of
Inclination) key. In this mode, the operation of other keys are disabled.
EXPECTED OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT:
The disabled can independently operate the wheelchair which takes smart decisions to
overcome the risk encountered during any obstacle and hollow detected. For this purpose, a
number of IR sensors are employed in the design. The existing designs only provide locomotion
of the wheelchair, whereas this current design not only helps in locomotion but also includes an
additional feature such as avoiding collisions with obstacles, avoiding mishap at staircase and
allows the smart wheelchair to be transformed into a bed whenever required thus providing
independency for the disabled.
