Simple Present vs. Simple Past vs. Present Continuous vs.

Past Continuous

Signal Words for Simple Past such as: yesterday, a few days ago, last week, last
year, two month ago...
Events that took place in the past.

Put in the right form of the verb. Use either Simple Present or Simple Past

a. I __________ (to clean) my car yesterday.

b. It ___________ (to rain) at the moment. Let’s ___________ (to stay) inside
today.

c. Marry_________ (to be) at the zoo last week. She__________ (to see) a
monkey there.

d. Tom ________ (to be) at the restaurant right now. Let’s go and _________
(to meet) him.

e. Susan________ (to come) yesterday, because she ________ (to have) a car
accident.

f. Look! I ________ (to see) Johnny over there. I __________ (to think) he
_______ (to be) ill a few days ago.

g. The weather ___________ (to look) good today, but remember last week? It
_______ (to be) raining the whole time.
Past Continuous/Progressive - Signal words

In the Past Continuous we often use a period of time. A typical signal word is
while. The Past Continuous is frequently used in sentences together with the
Simple Past.

while (In this part of the sentence we usually use Past Continuous.)

Example: While we were watching TV, Andy was surfing the internet.

when (In this part of the sentence we usually use Simple Past. The Past
Continuous is used in the other part of the sentence.)

Example: The ladies were talking when the accident happened.

Present Continuous/Progressive - Signal words

Signal words tell you what tense you have to use. In the Present Continuous
these words are used in situations which happen at the time of speaking.

Examples:

now
at the moment
Look!
Listen!
Fill in with PRESENT SIMPLE or PRESENT CONTINUOUS:

Father: Alice, what are you doing (you / do)?

Alice: I ……………………… (clean) the house. I usually ……………………


(do) my homework but today I ………………………….. (not / go) to school.

Father: Where’s your mum?

Alice: She …………………… (make) a cake. She usually ……………………..


(go) to the market but today my friends …………………………. (come).

Complete the sentences with the words in parentheses using the SIMPLE
PAST or the PAST CONTINUOUS:

1. While they ……………………………… (travel) to China,


Marco……………………. (keep) a diary.
2. Mrs. White …………………………………. (drive) past a house in Main Street
when she ……………………… (see) the ground floor on fire.
