Course Description
The course is a comprehensive study of the financial tools and the skills needed by managers
responsible for managing corporate financial holdings. The emphasis of the class is on
developing analytical skills and sound financial intuition. The primary focus of the class is
valuation. Fundamental principles are applied to topics such as the valuation of investment
projects, the valuation of a business, the valuation of mergers and restructurings, as well as the
firm’s financial policies, including capital structure, dividends, and stock repurchases,
acquirement venture capital, investment banking, long-term debt and leasing, options and
derivatives, international financial management and strategic and operational financial planning.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to:
 Define a firm's financial problem and the available courses of actions, and determine an
appropriate course of action;
 Demonstrate financial planning and forecast;

 Explain the concept of time value of money;

 Analyze different investment decisions;

 Evaluate the concept of asset evaluation and the cost of capital;

 Describe the concept of long-term financing

 Describe formal approach to investment project appraisal and selection;

 Give details of the variety of sources and method of investment finance;

 Identify approaches to the determination of the firm’s capital structure and how
investment and financing decision can interact; and

 Explain the finance implication of international business operations.

Course Description
This course deals about concepts and conventions, and analytical issues of financial and
managerial accounting. It exposes students to the environment of accounting and its role in
providing useful information for decision making by various stakeholders of business
organizations. By the end of the course, students should be able to appreciate the role, scope and
value of information for managing business organizations towards achieving their goals.

This course is designed to introduce students to the assumptions, principles, and practice of
financial accounting. The course content consists of a mix of descriptive material, financial
accounting rules, and the application of these rules to various business situations. Topics include
a detailed discussion of the accounting cycle, accounting for assets, liabilities, and shareholders’
equity, and financial statement analysis. The course is part of the foundation for all advanced
business school classes, and as such is of great importance for building a successful business
career.

Course Objectives

After completing the course, students are able to:


 Distinguish financial accounting from managerial accounting;
 Identify the four basic financial statements: income statement, balance sheet, statement of
cash flows and statement of stockholders’ equity;

 Describe the accrual basis of accounting and compare it to the cash basis of accounting;

 Illustrate the first four steps of the accounting cycle (source documents, recording entries
in the general journal, posting to the general ledger and preparing a trial balance);

 Distinguish the three components of the statement of cash flows: operating activities,
investing activities, and financing activities;

 Illustrate the direct method of determining cash flows from operating activities;

 Evaluate the financial statement analysis technique of ratio analysis; and

 Give details of cost accounting and budgeting concepts.
