Water Usage and Conservation PDF

This document discusses water usage and conservation at NIT Calicut. It finds that the average water consumption per person per day across the campus is 357.97 liters, which is higher than local norms. To better understand usage, water meters need to be installed by zone and building. The outdated water distribution network also needs redesign to support the growing population more efficiently and reduce pump operating costs. Conservation efforts like fixing leaks and educating users can help reduce unnecessary water usage.

As we all know water is essetial for life
and livelihoods. It is a single resource for
the wellbeing of planet.Due to increase
in population growth ,the problem of
water scarcity will increase day by
day.the impact of climate change and
need for sufficient water in our sources
,lakes and wetlands.Reducing the
amount of water we consume and waste
could make a significant difference to
water availability for people and
environment.
WATER DISTRIBUTION FROM THE
MAIN PUMP HOUSE:

Water is distributed via three main pipe

lines
1. Water from the 4 lakh litre capacity
tank.
2. Water from the 6 lakh litre capacity
tank .
3. Water to hostel C and MBH directly
from the main pipe line .

 OSTEL LINE NETWORK

H
Water supply from A hostel to F hostel and
staff house area also including GYM.
Two pumps of 150HP are working at main
pump house daily 8-9 hours to provide
water in the pipeline.
Our Case Study(Hostel A,C and E )
1. To determine the per capita water
consumption of the three hostels,namely
hostels A,C and E.
2. To find out the usage distribution of
water by the student A,C and E.
METHOD;
1. To find out the per capita of water
consumption we did the experiment
only in C hostel and the data was
extrapolated for hostel A and C by
assumption.
2. We selected hostel C because it
stores water separately for separate
water usages.These separate tanks
make it easy to calculate and identify
the water consumption when
compare to hostel E and A.
Data :
1)Water consumption by students
Hostel name No. of students Volume of water Per capita

C hostel 480 24000 50
A hostel 520 28160 55
E hostel 350 16100 46

2)Total water consumption by hostels (including students, mess staff,

caretakers)
Hostel name Total volume of water
usage in hostel (in

C hostel 32420
A hostel 36840
E hostel 24690

3) Distribution of water usage in each hostel per day in litres

E hostel 3850 6840 7950 3890 3900
Analysis :
In this project, we concluded following
methods or remedies to conserve the
water and these are as follows:

● In place of water taps used in hostels,

we should advise to implement the up
and down moving taps.
● We suggested all the consumers not to
use the water for the purpose of
gardening ,agriculture activity etc,due to
the harsh environment from last few
days .
● With the help of water distribution
system(water meter) we calculated the
water used at different times in different
hostels per month.
● We should advise to implement some
amount of fine if a person waste more
than average amount of water per
month.
● To determine the water consumption we
went to the pump house and from the
leakage of water first we should fill the
one litre water bottle and determine the
time taken to fill that.
Conclusion

The main findings of our report are as

follows:
1- At an aggregate level across all types of
water use (domestic, official, schools
etc.), the average pumphouse water
consumption is of 357.97 litres per person
per day. As per the preparatory studies
done for Kerala Development Plan), the
per capita water supply for Kerala is
268lpcd. So, the aggregate water supply
in NIT Calicut much higher than that of
Kozhikode as well.

2- It is difficult to compare the above

calculated lpcd with any published norm
because the NITC campus cannot be put
in a single category such as residential,
official, hostel, school. Hence, many
different norms are simultaneously
applicable.

3- In order to compare the 357.97 lpcd with

published norms, we need to breakdown
our water consumption into categories
such as residential, academic and
hostels. However, since there are no
internal water meters anywhere in the
campus it is difficult to determine this
breakdown

4- This indicates an important need to

introduce water meters at least by zones
and eventually at building level to monitor
water usage. The water tariff being charged
should be closely linked to the actual water
consumption and hence tied to the water
meters. Though this will come at an initial
cost, this should help us bring down the
wastage of water.

5- Currently the pumps in the pump house

are running 24X7 and cause high operating
expenses. The water distribution network is
old and can no longer efficiently support the
rising campus population. There is an
urgent need to redesign the entire NITC
water distribution network and create more
elevated storage reservoirs so that more of
the distribution can be gravity based.
