Tutorial 7: Combined Loading

This document is a tutorial on combined loading for a strength of materials course. It contains 6 questions analyzing stresses in mechanical parts under combined loading conditions. The questions involve determining normal stresses, shear stresses, principal stresses, and maximum shear stresses at various points on bars, brackets, posts, pipes, and shafts with multiple forces applied. The learning outcome is to analyze basic designs under combined loading by computing principal stresses and applying failure theories.

EME 1066 Strength of Materials

Tutorial 7: Combined Loading

Learning Outcome (LO):

LO4: Analyze a basic design or mechanical part under combined loading by computing principal
stresses and/or applying failure theories. (Cognitive - analyzing, level 4)

Programme Outcome (PO):

PO1 - Acquire and apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering fundamentals

Q1. Three forces are applied to the bar shown. Determine the normal and shear stresses at (a)
point a, (b) point b, (c) point c. (P8.45; Ans: (a) 18.39MPa, 0.391MPa; (b) 21.3MPa, 0.293MPa;
(c) 24.1MPa, 0)

Q2. For the bracket and loading shown, determine the normal and shear stress at (a) point a, (b)
point b. (P8.33; Ans: (a) -74.9MPa, 0; (b) -2.8MPa, 7.2MPa)

Q3. A 6-kN force and a 1.0kNm couple are applied at the top of the 62-mm diameter cast-iron
post shown. Determine the normal and shear stress at (a) point H, (b) point K. (P8.37; Ans: (a) 0,
26.7MPa; (b) -56.4MPa, 21.4MPa)

Q4. Two are applied to the pipe AB as shown. Knowing that the pipe has inner and outer
diameters equal to 35 and 42 mm, respectively. Determine the normal and shear stresses at (a)
point a, (b) point b. (P8.39; Ans: (a) 20.4MPa, 14.34MPa; (b) -21.5MPa, 19.98MPa)
