What is interview?

– Definition:
– Interview refers to a formal, in-depth conversation between two or more
persons, wherein exchange of information takes place with a view to check the
acceptability of a candidate for a job.
Types of interview

– Disciplinary

Types of interview:

– Mixed Interview: It is a combination of structured and unstructured interview,


wherein a blend of predetermined and spontaneous questions are asked by the
interviewer to the job seeker. It follows a realistic approach which allows the
employer to make a comparison between answers and get in-depth insights
too.
– Behavioural Interview: It is concerned with a problem or a hypothetical
situation, put before the candidate with an expectation to solve. It aims at
revealing the job seeker’s ability to solve the problem presented.

– Telephonic Interview: Telephonic interview is one that is conducted over


telephone. It is the most economical and less time consuming, which focuses on
asking and answering questions.
Types of interview:

– Stress Interview: The employer commonly uses stress interview for those jobs which are more
stress prone. A number of harsh, rapid fire questions are put to the interviewee with intent to
upset him. It seeks to know, how the applicant will respond to pressure.
– One to one Interview(Face to face interview): The most common interview type, in which
there are only two participants – the interviewer (usually the representative of the company)
and interviewee, taking part in the face to face discussion, in order to transfer information.
– Panel Interview: Panel interview is one, in which there is a panel of interviewers, i.e. two or
more interviewers, but limited to 15. All the members of the panel are different
representatives of the company.
– Video Interview: An interview, in which video conference is being employed, to judge or
evaluate the candidate. Due to its flexibility, rapidity and inexpensiveness, it is used
increasingly.

Telephonic interview

– Preparation:
– Keep all the documents handy
– Keep note-pen with you
– Stand in front of mirror while talking on phone
– Try to match your speaking rate and pitch with the interviewer
– Make sure that there is no disturbance during your phone call
– Turn off TV or stereo
– Have a glass of water handy
Some tips:

– Always greet the interviewer


– Answer the questions properly if required at length
– Politely ask to repeat the question if you have missed that, but it should not be
repeated many times
– Don’t interrupt the interviewers
– Sell your capabilities
– Always thank interviewer at the end of interview for his time
Perfect your interview skill

– Thoroughly review the job description


– Develop a solid understanding of what the company does
– Research relevant industry and company news
– Practice explaining your experience in a nutshell
– Practice explaining how your experience will compliment this role
– Pick relevant, engaging questions to ask
– Research your interviewers: Check out their company bios or LinkedIn profiles
– Research the organization’s dress code and select an outfit that’ll reflect the company culture (don’t wear a full business suit to
a startup or jeans to a law firm!)
– For phone interviews, secure a quiet place to talk (with great reception or—even better—a landline!)
For video interviews, stage the background of the room you’ll be in
– For in-person interviews, take steps to ensure that you’ll arrive early (five to 10 minutes is good), but not too early
