CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Nowadays, energy crisis is one of the main problem in a developing countries like

Philippines. Renewable energy is the only way to solve this problem. Renewable

energy is energy that is collected from renewable resources, which are naturally

replenished on a human timescale, such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves, and

geothermal heat. Among this renewable resources the solar power is one of the main

source of all energy produced by sunlight and it is one of the best way to use to solve

energy crisis because a huge amount of energy is transmitted from the sun every day.

One of the medium that is being used to generate electricity from the sunlight is solar

panel. Solar panel is a device that converts light to electricity where photovoltaic

modules is packaged in it. In photovoltaic systems, solar trackers positions the solar

panel at an angle relative to the Sun and it adjusts the direction that a solar panel is

facing according to the position of the Sun in the sky. By keeping the panel

perpendicular to the Sun, more sunlight strikes the solar panel, less light is reflected,

and more energy is absorbed.

The Philippines is located near the equator, right where there is adequate exposure

from the sun as it is within the path of the sun in the ecliptic plane all throughout the

year. Also, the Philippines has the 5th most expensive cost of electricity in the world.

The Philippines needs to have alternate means of energy supply that is less costly

and does not contribute to global warming. Using solar energy as source of electricity

can help Filipinos produce their own power and save cost in the long run. As the sun’s

location in the celestial sphere is not fixed all throughout the year, it is therefore
important to pinpoint the optimal tilt of solar panels to produce the maximum amount

of power available for semi-fixed installations. The solar tracker will provide a lucrative

solution for third world countries like the Philippines to integrate it into their solar

system with a comparatively low cost.

Energy crisis are present anywhere in our country, more specifically in our own

province. Through the years, Lanao del Norte experienced rotational brownouts

because of shortage of power supply. And even if we have our own hydroelectric

power plant to generate electricity throughout our province, the fact can’t be denied

that we still need more energy sources to fully sustain our power supply.

However, important progress has been made like using another renewable sources to

generate more electric supply throughout our province and to prevent electric power

interruption. Based on the information above, the proponents prompted to innovate

solar panel to improve its efficiency through the help of solar tracker.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

This study aims to innovate solar panel to improve its efficiency through the help of

solar tracker that can fully sustain the electric supply of Lanao del Norte. Specifically,

it aims to:

1. innovate solar panel with the use of solar tracker to follow the Sun’s motion;

2. increase the collection of solar power by the innovative solar panel; and

3. maximize the energy generation for the sustainability of electric power

throughout the province.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Nowadays, energy crisis is one of the main problem in a developing countries like

Philippines. Renewable energy is the only way to solve this problem. Renewable

through the help of solar tracker.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The study was conducted at Lanao del Norte National Comprehensive High School

from June 15, 2019 to August 15, 2019. The testing was done in the campus using the

Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE) program. This study is to

conceptualize an innovative way to improve the efficiency of solar panel through the

help of solar tracker.

DEFINITION OF TERMS

Microcontroller - A microcontroller is a compact integrated circuit designed to govern

a specific operation in an embedded system. A typical microcontroller includes a

processor, memory and input/output (I/O) peripherals on a single chip

Arduino UNO - The Arduino UNO is a widely used open-source microcontroller board

based on the Microchip ATmega328P microcontroller and developed by Arduino.cc.

Renewable Resources - A renewable resource is a substance of economic value that

can be replaced or replenished in less time than it takes to draw the supply down.

Energy Crisis - An energy crisis is any significant bottleneck in the supply

of energy resources to an economy. In literature, it often refers to one of

the energy sources used at a certain time and place, in particular those that supply

national electricity grids or those used as fuel in vehicles.

Solar Energy - Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the Sun that is harnessed

using a range of ever-evolving technologies such as solar heating, photovoltaics,

solar thermal energy, solar architecture, molten salt power plants and artificial

photosynthesis.

Solar Panel - Solar panels absorb sunlight as a source of energy to generate direct

current electricity. A photovoltaic module is a packaged, connected assembly of

photovoltaic solar cells available in different voltages and wattages.

Photovoltaic System - Photovoltaic systems (PV systems) are a renewable energy

technology which transforms the energy from the sun into electricity

using photovoltaics. These photovoltaics, also known as solar panels, provide a

reliable green energy solution.

Solar Tracker - A solar tracker is a specific device intended to move the PV modules

in such a way that they continuously face the sun with the aim of maximizing the

irradiation received by the PV array.
