Chapter 4

What are the three components of a map

Every map has, three components namely i.e. distance, direction,

and symbol.

What are the four cardinal directions?

• north

• south

• east

• west

What do you mean by the term the scale of the map?

• the scale is the ratio between the actual distance i.e. REAL

DISTANCE ON THE GROUND and the distance shown on

the map. It can be represented as 1cm=61km.

• when large areas like continents are countries are to be

shown on a paper then we use a small scale. It is called small

scale map.
• and when small areas like your village or town are to be

shown on paper then we use a large scale and the map is

called a large scale map.

How are maps more helpful than a globe?

• the globe is a 3D model where a map is a 2D map model.

• maps are far more flexible than the globe

• you can have a map of a country, continent, state or your city

or a village but you cannot have the globe of your village

• Even though globes are more attractive and they can help is

visualise phenomena like revolution and rotation of the earth.

Distinguish between sketch and plan

• The sketch is not drawn to scale. It is a rough drawing.

• The plan is drawn to scale. It is a 2D model.
