Pavement Information Note

The document provides a conversion table between the NAASRA roughness readings and International Roughness Index (IRI) measurements. The NAASRA roughness scale is commonly used in Australia while the IRI scale is used internationally. The table lists the equivalent NAASRA and IRI values up to an IRI of 5000 mm/km. For example, an IRI of 2 mm/km is equivalent to a NAASRA roughness of 56. The document notes that IRI is sometimes quoted in m/km instead of mm/km.

CONVERSION OF NAASRA ROUGHNESS READINGS TO

INTERNATIONAL ROUGHNESS INDEX

Most 0verseas specifications and roughness measuring equipment

nowadays specify or read in International Roughness indices (IRIs).In
Australia we will probably carry on using the NAASRA roughness car for
some time, but we will also need to know the results in IRIs as well.

For a quick reference the following table equates the two. Please note that
here the IRIs are given in mm/km where as it is also normal to quote
them in m/km, ie an IRI of 2 has a NAASRA equivalency of 56.
