LYRICAL JAZZ Syllabus

Teacher: Angelo Ruggieri


The initial techniques and theoretical concepts of jazz dance are explored. Fundamental
concepts of alignment, balance, and coordination are studied.
All jazz classes will include dance terminology and dance history.
Class Objectives
1. To build awareness of, and skill in technical movements.
2. To build awareness of, and skill in Jazz dance technique.
3. To increase knowledge of Jazz dance history.
4. To increase knowledge of movement through space.
5. To increase rhythmic ability.
6. To increase awareness of body alignment and weight shifts.
7. To install an appreciation of dance as self-expression and as an art form
8. To learn about performance and rehearsal etiquette.
9. To learn what musical theatre dance is, as well as its characteristics.

Reading Materials
Students will read from a variety of sources including teacher handouts, articles,
biographies, and related books. They are expected to gain literal understanding of
terminology and historical facts. Students are also expected to interpret, analyse and
evaluate information from the readings.
