SWOT ANALYSIS
1) Location of the organization is the biggest strength of the organization. As this division is
based at Kumbalgodu industrial area hence there are large number of industries with heavy
electrical equipment that require Control and relay panels for their proper working.
2) VOLTECH enjoys a customer base that consists of names such as Larsen & tourbo, Siemens,
SAIL and BHEL to name a few.
3) Strong on the job training method is employed by VOLTECH under which the trainees work
under existing employees and get trained while working with them. This enables the trainees
to learn while working and resolve issues that they might encounter during their job.
2. The organisational setup is very rigid and is not very efficient in handling sudden changes in
business environment.
3. Too much control by the head office sometimes leads to delays in decision making.
4. The company depends upon suppliers for the delivery of important parts which are crucial in
the manufacture of relay and panels. If a vendor delays in the delivery of any part then the
entire manufacturing process gets affected.
5. Low degree of promotional policies is a big weakness for the organisation as due to increase
in infrastructure projects and industries, new competitors are entering the market with
attractive payment schemes.
15
6. Looming shortage of skilled technical manpower and low productivity is another weakness
for voltech. Since the apprentice working in the assembly department are mostly ITI
certificate holders hence these employee are very unstable since they easily find job
OPPORTUNITY:
1. Currently VOLTECH manufactures Relay and panels up to 220kV system voltage and is
considering designing and manufacturing Control and relay panels for system voltage up to
400 kV.
2. The CRP division is considering to expand its products range by including solar panel
3. Rapid growth in infrastructure projects and industries around the city to generate demand for
relays and panels.
4. Information Technology and IT enabled services would help the organisation in conducting
its day to day operations more efficiently.
THREAT:
1. High competition from competitors like paramount industries and SVG control system
private limited are a threat to VOLTECH.
2. Increasing price for metal and other auxiliary parts is also a concern for this organisation.
16
KEY RESULT AREA
1. LOCATION OF THE COMPANY : The company is located at the heart of the Kumbalgodu
industrial area with a large number of small and large scale industries. These industries have
electrical machineries and equipment that require relay and panels for proper functioning.
5. COMMUNITY IMAGE: The way your organization is perceived by the social, vendor,
customer and employee communities - Stakeholder perceptions.

company acquires raw materials from various suppliers like Siemens, Schneider Electric. These raw
materials constitute of components like 5-way connectors, Panel Mount ,basic electrical components
like resistors, diodes, capacitors, transistors, other more complex material like DC power supplies,
signal generators and other measurement and analysis instruments like multimeters and Am meter
etc.
The steps for acquiring raw materials at the company is given as follows: -
When the company receives an order from a client, it first prepares the basic designs on various
computer softwares like Auto cad, E-Tap, Solid works. After this design is approved by the client,
based on this very design a bill of materials is prepared to undertake the process of acquiring raw
material.
Upon the arrival of raw material at the factory. All the components undergo a quality testing
procedure which is undertaken by the quality testing department where all the components are
18
checked for any minute dysfunctionalities. The components are bought out from the reputed sources
and fitted at appropriate places on the panel as per manufacturers design. The circuit as per the
design is laid out and the control panel is tested for the proper functioning as per relevant
specifications. The components are tested as per IS: 8623-1977 regarding technical aspects.
If the raw material components are considered fit for use by the company, it is put through to the

MANPOWER PLANNING
For manpower planning the organisation has its own VOLTECH HR Division at the head office in
Chennai to address the skill deficit that the company is facing from graduates in the field of
Engineering and allied sciences. However for recruitment of ITI’s the company hires by way of
walk in interviews and also through references of existing employees.
VOLTECH HR is the first point of contact for all new trainees and employees inducted into
VOLTECH. Aside from providing all information and training pertaining to statutory process, the
Company’s Vision and Mission, Management, rules and regulations, it also assesses each candidate
based on their talents, skills and expertise to assign them to roles best suiting their capabilities.

coordinates with each department and division of the company for selecting volunteers as well as
organizing all field events at the CSR Locations of VOLTECH.
The following steps are performed for manpower planning within the organisation:
1. An evaluation or appreciation of existing manpower resources.
2. An estimation of the proportion of currently employed manpower resources which are likely to be
within the firm by the forecast date.
3. An assessment or forecast of labour requirements if the organisation’s overall objectives are to be
achieved by the forecast date.
4. Adoption of required measures to ensure that the necessary resources are available as and when
required, that is, the manpower plan.
21
PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL
As of now, the primary target for the Relay and Panel division is to acquire more and more
clients in the state of Karnataka. There are a few big industries that are considering placing
relay and panels orders based on the reports of a few trial tests that have been conducted. The
division is also considering designing and manufacturing Control and relay panels for system
voltage up to 400 kV which would help them to expand their customer base.
22
MANAGERIAL OBSERVATIONS FROM THE STUDY :
3. The Structural Environment at VOLTECH is Mechanistic in nature i.e. there is a high degree
of specialization and rigid rules and regulations are imposed. The mechanistic structure is a
basic characteristic of most Bureaucratic Organizations.
4. The VOLTECH Plant has designed its organizational structure to function in a highly stable
business environment. The plant functions throughout the year to achieve mostly pre-
determined targets and the management tries to avoid any unexpected changes in this
production plan. The structure is so rigid that sudden changes cannot be handled easily.
5. In some departments there are unnecessary sub-divisions and this tends to reduce efficiency.
For example, the production department has been divided into assembling department
and aligning department. The people working in these two sub departments have same
qualification and their tasks are also very similar but still they have been separated by a thin
line in the organization.
