THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Rationale

The true value of education can be summarized in Nelson Mandela’s words, “Education

is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Education indeed, is

very important for human beings. One’s education can identify his or her future path. Without

education, the world that we are living now would not be like this; we would be naive of the

innovations that can be done in our natural resources, wide-eyed about the world we are living

in and the vast universe our planet resides, and naïf of technological advances, in which today,

makes our life easier and better.

Education cannot simply change the world in an instant. Education without learning is a

complete failure in the society. What is important is what we have learned and how did we

apply these learning in our daily lives. Education is, undeniably, associated with learning.

Through education, we can learn new things that can help us become better individual, a

productive part of the society in which we live in. Our learning can help us choose what could

be best suited for us, decide what road we should take, and which steps to follow. These

learning can even identify a person, his or her background including his or her family. A

person’s learning can make or break that person.

What we input in our minds is a very important factor of what we have learned.

Education has a big impact for students because they are exposed to it most of their childhood

and adolescent years in which they are still learning things, applying it according to their own

perception and developing their identity which will help them in their future lives. Education is

a big part of developing a person because through this, students can learn good and reliable

things, instead of learning bad, irresponsible ones.

Even though education is designed for teaching students holistically for them to cope in

different situations they might encounter in their lives, not all students can learn and excel in all

kinds of knowledge. Each individual has his or her own capacity in learning. Each individual has

his or her own forte that others find it a little too difficult to take in. Others are very good in

one aspect of education while he or she is very poor on other aspects.

The purpose of this study is to determine which aspects of their subjects the students

find it hard to take in; in which this will identify the intelligence that best suited them.

This study aims to enhance the students’ learning proficiency by determining which

subjects the students find the weakest based on their individual intellectual capacity.
Theoretical Background

We all know that students have different learning capacity. They may be good at

academic area or kinesthetic area that requires students to move their bodies. Some students

find difficulties in participating at school for they have different capacity that is why teachers

should determine the weakest subject of students to hastily give them an aid on how to does

the students can participate with the group without feeling behind. There are many theories

that are associated of different intelligence capacity but the researchers are all fascinated with

Howard Gardner Multiple Intelligence Theory. According to (Gardner 1999:41-43) he initially

formulated a list of seven intelligences. The first two have been typically valued in schools; the

next three are usually associated with the arts and the final two are what Howard Gardner

called ‘personal intelligences’.

Gardner believe that student has “linguistic intelligence” involves sensitivity to spoken

and written language, the ability to learn languages, and the capacity to use language to

accomplish certain goals. This intelligence includes the ability to effectively use language to

express oneself rhetorically or poetically; and language as a means to remember information.

Some of the examples that Howard Gardner sees as having high of linguistic intelligence are

those Writers, poets, lawyers and speakers. As a second aspect of Gardner Theory is “logical-

mathematical intelligence” those students who are good in analyzing problems logically, carry

out mathematical operations, and investigate issues scientifically. In Gardner’s words, it entails

the ability to detect patterns, reason deductively and think logically. This intelligence is most

often associated with scientific and mathematical thinking.

Three kinds of different intelligence that is associated with the arts. First, “musical

intelligences” it involves skill in the performances, composition, and appreciation of musical

patterns. It encompasses the capacity to recognize and compose musical pitches, tones, and

rhythms. According to Howard Gardner musical intelligence runs in an almost structural parallel

to linguistic intelligence. Second, “bodily-kinesthetic intelligence” entails the potential of using

one’s whole body or parts of the body to solve problems. It is the ability to use mental abilities

to coordinate bodily movements. Howard Gardner sees mental and physical activity as related.

Third, “spatial intelligence” involves the potential to recognize and use the patterns of wide

space and more confined areas.

Two types of personal intelligence as Gardner said the “interpersonal intelligence”

which is concerned with the capacity to understand the intentions, motivations and desires of

other people. It allows people to work effectively with others. Educators, sales people,

religious, political leaders and counselor well-developed interpersonal intelligence. Next,

“interpersonal intelligence” entails the capacity to understand oneself, to appreciate one’s

feelings, fears and motivation’s. In Howard Gardner’s view it involves having an effective

working model of ourselves, and to be able to use such information to regulate our lives.

In Frames of Mind Howard Gardner treated the personal intelligences “as a piece”. In

most cultures, they are often linked together. However, he still argues that it makes sense to

think of two forms of personal intelligence. Gardner claimed that the seven intelligences rarely

operate independently. They are used at the same time and tend to complement each other as

people develop skills or solve problems

Review of Related Literature

According to Annick M. Brennen, the ultimate goal of schools is to transform its

students by providing knowledge and skills and by building character and instilling virtue

(Sergiovanni, 1991). Students with various intellectual abilities, from multicultural and diverse

socio-economic backgrounds are the object of this educational process.

The behavioural interpretation of motivation rests on B. F. Skinner’s behavioural

learning theories and focuses on the reinforcement of desired behaviour through the use of

extrinsic reward. Biehler and Snowman (1993), state that behavioural interpretations of

learning help to explain why some pupils react favourably to particular subjects and dislike

others. Social theorists, such as Albert Bandura, emphasize the impact of students’

identification and imitation of someone, pointing out their resulting positive academic

outcomes.

Biehler and Snowman (1993) pointed out that Maslow described cognitive needs and

aesthetic needs which play a critical role in the satisfaction of basic needs. They said that

Maslow maintained that such conditions as the freedom to investigate and learn, fairness,

honesty, and orderliness in interpersonal relationships are critical because their absence makes

satisfaction of the five basic needs impossible. The limitation of Maslow’s theory is that

teachers may not know which of a student’s needs is not satisfied; or even if they know, they

might not be able to fill that need. However, teachers can always enhance students’ self-

esteem by creating classroom conditions that will increase students’ achievement.

Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory can be used for curriculum development,

planning instruction, selection of course activities, and related assessment strategies.

Instruction which is designed to help students develop their strengths can also trigger their

confidence to develop areas in which they are not as strong. Students’ multiple learning

preferences can be addressed when instruction includes a range of meaningful and appropriate

methods, activities, and assessments.

How children learn...

.. We discovered that education is not something which the teacher does, but that it is a natural

process which develops spontaneously in the human being. It is not acquired by listening to

words, but in virtue of experiences in which the child acts on his environment. The teacher’s

task is not to talk, but to prepare and arrange a series of motives for cultural activity in a special

environment made for the child. -Dr. Maria Montessori

Why math is their weakest subject?

According to the students:

 Because it is so boring and we will NEVER use the majority of it. If you understand it

(because you are clever) then it’s fun. But for me and lots of others that despite math’s,

it’s because we struggle to understand it and also because a lot of it we won’t need later

on in life.
 Math is just a waste of time.

English

 I honestly dislike English. Learning about Shakespeare and analyzing poetry by far has to

be one of the most boring subjects out there. I mean in reality are we really going to

need to understand how to interpret meanings, emotions, tones, themes of short

stories in order to become successful? I want to learn how to make money and able to

live a great and wealthy lifestyle, however citing and quoting poems is certainly not

going to make me achieve that type of lifestyle.

Science

 Science is fun. Because you learn about how to investigate crimes it is very interesting. If

science didn’t exist then we wouldn’t know anything about weight and how life goes

how to help our plants how to be a doctor that is science.

 It’s unnecessarily hard. They teach us invaluable life skills which we won’t even consider

using in life. They should teach us more important stuff, and science maybe kids will be

interested in. Rather than the study of tectonic plates, and cell membranes.

Filipino

 Filipino is like the translation of English, it just confuses me.

Home Economics

 It’s boring but it’s necessary. To learn about things you need to do when you’re older.

Like cooking, jobs, sewing, laundry and etc.

AP

 History is so lame, I mean so what if you don’t know what happened before it’s what’s

happening now that’s important plus it is so BORING.

 History is the most boring subject, I just hate history. I feel so bad when I read history.

Why do we have to know what happened in past? This is the most irritating subject.

MAPEH

Arts

 How is this USEFUL in life? I can see music and drama, but ART! Only take this if you’re

an aspiring artist, this subject is useless if you aren’t.

PE

 By breaking the vow of its motto at school, PE wastes an entire class period.

 Education is meant to get good from students. Does PE do that? No! PE makes everyone

believe that body power is more important than intellect.

Health

 Learning health and exercising is great. Sure math is more important, but don’t you

think we need a good health so bring can function perfectly?

THE PROBLEM

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this study is to assess the academic performance of 6 th grade students in

Maslog Elementary School in order to provide an Activity book that will help the teachers in

enhancing the intellectual capacity of these students.

Specifically, this study attempts to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of students in terms of:

1.1. age
1.2. gender
1.3. number of years enrolled in the school
2. What is the level of the academic performance of 6th grade students in following subject

areas:

2.1. Math
2.2. English
2.3. Science
2.4. Filipino
2.5. Hekasi
2.6. MSEP
2.7. HELE
2.8. Values
3. What enrichment program that can be proposed based on the findings that will be

beneficial to the academic performance of 6th grade students with regards of their weakest

subject?
Hypothesis of the Study

There will be no significant impact in the performance of the students according to

subject matter.

Significance of the Study

The outcome of this research will provide benefit to the following:

School Administrator. It will help them implement programs that could be a great assistance in

enhancing academic performance of these children.

This study may serves as a guide for them to create facilitative school activities specifically

designed to cater their academic performance.

Students. It will help to the following students improved their educational backgrounds. By

determining their weakest subject point, the activity book that the researchers are going to

propose is an aid for them to catch up at that certain subject.

Parents. They may encourage their children to set a time to study that could help them

enhance their performance in school.

Teachers. It is also a relief to the teachers that the students will have their own individual

activity book in which students can make it as a reviewer. In relation to the teacher, it will be

much easier for them to cater or to respond to the needs of his/her students.

Researchers. By determining the weakest subject of the student based on individual intellectual

capacity, the researchers will give an aid in which it is a big contribution the students and to the
school. In studying this, researchers have gained the knowledge, different theories, and all

about this study in which can be a great help for the coming school years.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This study was mainly conducted so as to determine the Academic Capacity of the

students of Maslog Elementary School in every subject area where they are weak at during the

school year 2017-2018. The phases will consider the age and subject area where the students

are weak at.

The researchers are all reminded of the limitation of the study. Therefore the data that

are collected by the researcher are to be able to consider by the researcher in this study by

having utmost intimate mind and its souls. In addition, the identicalness of the respondents are

knowing to be dynamic and confidential and such, was highly cover by the researcher to be in

secure for the exclusive use of the researcher.
