This see-saw is balanced. It does not move. There is a boy on the left of the pivot and
a man on the right.

The boy exerts a force of 300N (his weight) and is six metres from the pivot.

The man exerts a force of 600N and is three metres from the pivot. There is no
movement because the man and the boy exert the same turning force.

This turning force is usually called a moment.

The turning force around a pivot is equal to the force times its distance from the
pivot:

Moment of force = force x distance from pivot.

= weight x distance from pivot of boy

= W1 x D1

= 300 N x 6m

= 1800 Nm (Newton metres)

Moment of force = W2 x D2

= 600 N x 3 m

= 1800 Nm

The boy exerts a turning force in an anti clockwise direction. This moment is equal
to the force multiplied by the distance and is equal to 1800 Nm. The man exerts the
same turning force in a clockwise direction. Why is there no movement? Because the
moments are equal.

What happens if the man moves away from the pivot?

If the man moves away from the pivot D2 increases and the clockwise moment also
increases. The see-saw rotates in a clockwise direction.

What happens if the boy moves towards the pivot?

This is a lever. The man presses on the lever. He applies a force, an effort force. Id
D2 X E is greater than L X D1, the lever rotates in a clockwise direction and the rock
moves. The effort force is less than the weight of the rock because D2 is greater than
D1.

The lever helps the man. It is a simple machine. Levers are used for moving big
loads with smaller effort forces. Levers magnify the effort. When a lever magnifies
an effort force five times, its mechanical advantage is five.

LACV-30

The most versatile of hovercraft is the LACV-30. It maneuvers on snow, desert, ice,
slush, marshes, river beds, and swamps. It performs in extreme weather situations-
from fog, and blowing sand to high humidity. It operates in temperatures ranging
from -40 to over 120F. And when it comes to rough water, this hovercraft has the
ability to operate in sea states 0 to 3.

This 30 ton payload hovercraft has over 1,600 square feet of cargo deck with tie-
down fittings for transporting vehicles and containers.

The LACV-30 is not just a cargo craft; it has been used in many jobs including:

 Patrol of inter-coastal, harbor and inland waterways

 Search and rescue
 Offshore oil exploration and mining

This light air-cushion vehicle is environmentally safe in sensitive coastal and wetland

The LACV-30 hovercraft can be transported by ship, truck, aircraft, or rail allowing
for rapid response to any situation. It is deployable on oceangoing ships and requires
no docks, ports, berthing or cargo mover systems. This hovercraft comes with a
