CHAPTER IV

RESEARCH FINDINGS

This chapter presents the result of the research. They are the result of

cycle 1 and cycle 2.

4.1 The Description of Research Setting

This research was held in the first grade students at SMP

Muhammadiyah 7 Wuluhan in the 2018/2019 academic year which consist of 21

students.

The research consisted of two cycles and there were three meetings in

each cycle. The first cycle meeting and evaluation was done on 20th, 21st, and

22nd of May 2019 and the second cycle was done on 18th, 19th, and 20th of June

2019. The implementation of the action in each cycle was done in every Monday,

Tuesday, and Wednesday. The procedure of each cycle were covered planning,

implementing, observing, and reflecting.

4.1.1 The Description of Cycle 1

There were three meetings in cycle 1. The first meeting was held on May

20th 2019 from 07.00 until 08.20. The second meeting was held on May 21st 2019

from 07.00 until 08.20, and the third meeting was held on May 22 nd 2019 from

07.00 until 08.20. The procedures in cycle 1 covered planning, implementing,

observing, and reflecting.

4.1.1.1 Planning

The planning was done cooperatively with the English teacher to decide

how many meetings that the researcher wanted to improve students’ vocabulary

mastery through Composite Picture and intended to plan such preparation that was

neeeded in implementing the action, such as lesson plan, observation sheet and

numbers of the students and the items of test. The researcher prepared the

material that would be given to the first grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 7

in the second semester and the material had been given was about identifying

people, animal, and things around. The action in cycle 1 was carried out based on

the lesson plan that had been made by the researcher (see appendix 13). The

implementation of the action was two meeting, and the third meeting was for the

test. Each meeting provided 2x40 minutes.

4.1.1.2 Implementing

Implementation in cycle 1 was carried out in two meetings. The

implementation in the first and second meetings was based on the lesson plan

made by the researcher (see appendix 13) and the third meeting was test. The first

meeting was done on May 20th 2019 from 07.00 until 08.20. Composite Picture

was taught in the teaching of vocabulary. Before starting the activities, the

researcher introduce and explain the topic to the students. The researcher

explained the objective of the lesson, then guide the students background

knowledge based on the topic.

In this step, the researcher conducted the activities according to the

schedule that was arranged in planning stage. As implementing, the researcher

explained about noun, verb, and adjective. The researcher explained the material

and gave the example of noun, verb, and adjective. The researcher confirmed

students’ understanding by asking them the definition and the difference of noun,

verb, and adjective. After that, the researcher gave a picture and ask the students

to mention every object and activites on the picture. The researcher tells how to

pronounce the words and discussed its meaning in the class together. The students

are repeat the pronounciation. The researcher ask students to make a note or write

every words that students got from the lesson. After that, the students come

foward and write their work on the board. The researcher gaves revising directly

after the student write a words.

The second meeting was done on May 21 st 2019 from 07.00 until 08.20.

the implementation in second meeting was the same as the first meeting, but the

actvities are difference. The teaching and learning was focuse on identifying the

picture (place, object, and activities). So, in this meeting the students learn about

noun, verb and adjective that related to the picture. After explaining and giving

example about noun, verb and adjective the researcher wanted to know the

students’ understanding by asking the students to write the words that they got

from the picture based on its classification. The students presents their work and

researcher gave revising directly. The third meeting of the cycle 1 was done on

May 22nd 2019 from 07.00 until 08.20, and the vocabulary test was given to the

students.

4.1.1.3 Observing

Observation was intended to collect the data of the research. Observing

of the cycle 1 was done by using vocabulary test and field note. The test was used

in order to get studets’ vocabulary score as the data about the result of vocabulary

test of the students after given the action. The test items were 25 questions in the

form of multiple choice. The standard of average score of vocabulary test is 70.

The field note is used to monitor the activities during the teaching and

learning process. It was done in every teaching and learning process of vocabulary

mastery by using Composite Picture. The English teacher as the observer did the

observation by sitting at the back of students’ seat in the classroom, while the

researcher as the teacher was teaching vocabulary through Composite Picture.

4.1.1.4 Reflecting

This reflection was done after calculating the students’ score of

vocabulary test and the result of class observation using Composite picture in

teaching and learning process. After the researcher analyzed the result of students’

score, then the research found the problem why the first cycle was don

successful. It was found that students’ score did not achieve the target score of

this research. the target score of this research was at least 70% students get ≥ 70.

In fact, it was only 66% of students wh got ≥ 70 (see appendix 17). Meanwhile the

notes during the teaching and learning process conducted can bee seen on

appendix (appendix 23).

4.1.2 The Description of Cycle 2

Since the result of the action in cycle 1 had not achieved the objective of

the research yet, the action in cycle 2 were implemented. There were three

meetings in cycle 2. The first meeting was held on June 18th 2019 from 70.00

until 08.20. The second meeting was held on June 19th 2019 from 07.00 until

08.20, and the third meeting was held on May 20th 2019 from 07.00 until 08.20.

The procedures in cycle 2 covered four stages of activites namely (1) planning, (2)

implementing, (3) observing, and (4) reflecting.

4.1.2.1 Planning

Based on the reflection in cycle 1, it is necessary to conduct some

activities to revise plan of the action that was done. The steps and activities in the

second cycles were almost same with the first cycle. The differences between both

cycle were in the purpose of the activities. In the second cycle, the purpose was to

revise the action in the first cycle. Some problems and notes can be identified as

follows: 1) The students were less concentrated during teaching and learning

process, 2) most of them were not active to ask question when they did not

understand the material, 3) the students were lack of vocabulary, so it was

difficult for them to know the meaning of words.

To solve the problems in the first cycle, the action planning which was

applied in the second cycle was arranged, as follows: 1) the researcher motivated

students and explained the advantages of vocabulary in learning English, 2) the

researcher rearranged a seat of the students based on the group, so they can

discuss with their friends when they did not understand about the material and

Composite Picture can be accompanied with other strategy, 3) the researcher also

explained more about noun, verb, and adjective.

The material given in cycle 2was also about identifying pepple, animal,

and things around. The implementation of the action was two meeting, and the

third meeting was for the test. Each meeting provided 20x40 minutes.

4.1.2.2 Implementing

Implementation in cycle 2 was revised based on the problem found in

cycle 1, it carried out in two meetings. The implementation in the first and second

meetings was based on the lesson plan II made by the researcher (see appendix

18), and the third meeting was test. The first meeting was done on June 18th 2019

from 07.00 until 08.20. It was expected that after implementing the action in

cycle 2, the result of the students’ vocabulary mastery would be better than the

first one. Before starting the activities, the researcher rearranged a seat of the

students, the students who sat in the back were moved to in front of the class, then

the researcher explained the topic to the students and the objective of the lesson.

Composite Picture was taught in the teaching of vocabulary. The students were

allowed to discuss with their friends in finding words. Then, the researcher gave

more explanation about things around ( place, buildings, activities, objects) and

tells how to pronounce and write the words based on the classification.

Afterwards, the students were asked to repeat the words.

The second meeting was done on June 19th 2019 from 07.00 until 08.20.

In the second meeting, the researcher asked the students to classify the things

based on usual places. The implementation of the action in second meeting was

the same as in the first meeting. Composite picture was used in teaching and

learning vocabulary. The third meeting was done on June 20th 2019 from 07.00

until 08.20, and the vocabulary test was given.

4.1.2.3 Observing

The activities in the class observation of cycle 2 are same with the way in

cycle 1. Observation was intended to collect the data of the research. Observation

was done by using vocabulary test and field notes. The test consisted of 25

question in the form of multiple choice. The The standard of average score of

vocabulary test is 70.

As in the first cycle, the field note is used to monitor the activities during

the teaching and learning process. It was done in every teaching and learning

process of vocabulary mastery by using Composite Picture. The English teacher

as the observer did the observation by sitting at the back of students’ seat.

4.1.2.3 Reflecting

In this reflection step, the researcher calculated the score of students’

vocabulary test after being taught using Composite picture. Then, the researcher

analyzed students’ test score and the result showed a satisfying result. It was

proven by the precentage of students’ score, there were 16 of 21 students or 76%

students who reached the target score that is ≥ 70 (see appendix 22). Meanwhile

the notes during the teaching and learning process conducted can bee seen on

appendix (appendix 24).

4.2 Research Result

4.2.1 The Result of cycle 1.

The vocabulary test in cycle 1 was conducted on June 22rd 2019 in order

to know how far the students improve their vocabulary mastery after being taught

by using Composite Picture. The test was administrated in the last meeting. The

action were regarded successful if 70% of students could achieve the target score

that was ≥ 70. The result of the students’ test in cycle 1 was calculated and

described as follows :

The observing using field note was done during the teaching and learning

process. It was to observe the researcher’ action and the students’ activities

including the response, participation, achievement and everything which was

found during the action and it was in the form of field note. The result of field

notes showed that there were many weakness from both researcher and students

during the implementation the action in cycle 1. The notes in cycle 1 can be

identified as follows: 1) the researcher spoke to fast, it make the students could

not hear clearly to the teacher explanation and instructions, 2) some of students

did not give positive response to the teacher explanation or they did not paid

attention during teaching and learning process, they tend to speak by themselves

and it make them confuse in catching the instruction and doing the task, (3) most

of them were not active to ask question when they did not understand the material,

but they were afraid and hesitant to ask question to the teacher.

Based on the result of students’ vocabulary test and field notes above, it

can be conclude that there were several problems that researcher have to revised

in the next cycle. So, the cycle 2 should be better than the first one.

4.2.2 The Result of Cycle 2

In cycle 2, some revision has been made. As in cycle 1, the result of

cycle 2 consisted of the vocabulary test result and the field note result. There was

an improvement in cycle 2 both of the test and the observation results.

After giving another activities in the cycle 2, the researcher then decided

to held test to the students in order to know is there an improvement on the

students’ vocabulary mastery. The test was done on June 20th 2019 from 07.00

until 08.20. Based on the result of vocabulary test in cycle 2, the criteria of

success could be achieved because the result of the vocabulary test was 16 of 21

students reached the standard score requirement (≥70)) and 5 students did not

reach the standard minimum score (≥70). The result of the students’ test in cycle

2 was calculated and described as follows :

The observing using field note was done in each meeting of teaching and

learning vocabulary. In the cycle 2, the researcher has revised some activities and

rearranged students’s seat before the class begin and gave more explanation about

noun, verb, andjective annd the rules in using Composite picture. The result of

field notes showed that there were some improvement both teacher and

students.They can discuss with their friends and also the teacher, it make them

have good interaction, confidence and enjoy in the class. Most of the students are

willing to come forward and present their findings about the picture in front of the

class confidently.

Based on the vocabulary test result of cycle 2 and the field notes result,

it can be concluded that the standard requirement of the precentage score of the

students in vocabulary test had already achieved. So, it can be reported that the

teaching vocabulary mastery through Composite picture in second cycle was

consider succesful and not necessary to continue to the next cycle.
